Don't. It's a pretty lousy PvE boat. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

You have three choices:
Rails → zzz-worthy damage. Drones → worse than an Ishtar. Blasters → eons wasted on travelling from rat to rat. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

It hasà or well, it can have a better tank, but you don't particularly need that. But even so, you lose the Ishtar's shield-tanking ability and the flexibility that provides to the platform as a whole.
More importantly, though, the Proteus gives you fewer drones (= slower missions); a smaller drone bay (= fewer options); worse bonuses (= less drone HP, less control range); and you need to train a losable skill up to even get those bonuses ù you need have it at V to match the damage bonuses the Ishtar gives you automatically. You basically have to give up the better (but unnecessary) extra tanking ability to make up for these deficiencies, and the biggest one ù missing that fifth heavy/sentry drone ù cannot be compensated for at all. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

The Ishtar is the easy choice here since your into the mission side of things. If you must fly the Proteus get, into the WH side of EvE and dont' look back. The Proteus is a fun boat to fly w/ a MWD and blasters (the solo fit I use in C2-C3's is all blasters / no drones). But then its really just an expensive Diemos. For WH gangs we use RR and drone / rail fits that work wonders on even the harder Mag and combat sites. The TIII isn't always the better option here, but it's always the more flexable assuming you are willing to try funky fits from time to time. If you insist on using drones, stick to an Ishtar / Gila. Any questions on fits ect contact me in-game.

As a fellow proteus pilot, i can tell you its a wonderful ship. I mostly use blasters as well i like to get up close and personal but the rails will work also. Configured for drones the ship is tougher than an ishtar but with less bandwidth. Honestly you won't miss the 5th heavy because its rare to use them? As for drone space, who really cares? pve wise you only lose drones if u go web browsing while running the mission( i do this )
if you equip it right there is just about nothing pve wise that can kill that ship, I generally rig 1 cap circuit, 1 thermic armor rig and 1 explosive rig. for therimic/kinetic missions all you need is a dmg control and a repper. everything else fit as necessary.
The biggest complaint i have with the proteus is the cargo space, filled with ammo you can't carry anything and you need that much ammo.
Also, use the flexibility( this is its biggest strength) the proteus provides, add tracking modules, ecm modules, webbers, painters, tractors, remote repper( this is nice for repairing your drones or the buddy who can't tank as well as you can)

The proteus can be a good ship, just not for missioning.
