I often times see drones being popped by smartbombs and think, 'nifty'. Am I right in thinking a small smartbomb(s) on a cruiser would be able to hit any orbiting hostile drone? I'm not really speaking in terms of overall effectiveness in large scale pvp but more solo, and extremely situational.
I know the ship's size has something to do with the overall effectiveness of it's use, but from what I can tell it's only the really large ships. I've never practiced this and was hoping before I do go out and die in a fire, I might be able to gain a little insight first.

In small solo pvp engagements that last a minute or so, killing drones won't matter that much you should focus on putting as much guns/missles on as possible to kill the guy launching the drones. IMO smartbombs are for capital ships and suicide gankers.

On a ship with spare utility slots, it makes decent sense. But the cruisers I fly, I see no reason to fit one (Rupture, Thorax, Vexor) as there are simply better / more important things (neuts, actual DPS).
It makes sense on a ship like the Dominix or similar. Cruiser-size, it's a bit silly.

This is how I look at it.
Is the amount of dos or the value of the ability I would lose less then the loss of the dps from the drones I'm hitting? If it's not than it's a waste IMO.
However my tactics are mire live longer than your opponent thus I would sacrifise dps for taking dps from the enemy. More agressive players would say stuck with the dps

If you can web a drone and get close to that drone then yes even a small smartbomb can do the job. But I fear that tactic is only good with drone boat like the vexor if he uses drones for his main offense. Thats the only good use I can think of.
If its not a drone boat, dont bother using smartbombs. With good skills his drones will have enough range, hp and durability to endure a good amount of time...enough for pvp that is. Theres also the fact that most "good" pvp'ers will call their drones off if they see them damage and use them on you again just to gain enough distance.

Which is kinda the point.
If a drone is destroyed it can't hurt you.
If it is flying back to it's controller it can't hurt you.
If it is recalled into a drone bay it can't hurt you.
All three remove DPS. Smartbombs do work. That being said I have never fitted them on a cruiser. I do fit them often on my Domi's. With the drone HP buff you get you can SB your own drones and still destroy or force a recall before taking yours out.
One thing to consider, a SB is the only way to deal with ECM drones if your jammed.
In the end you will usually have another fitting that is more useful then a SB to put on a ship. If you have the slot and fitting space, it won't hurt.
Edit: Bah! Er... don't think a small smartbomb has the range to hit an orbiting drone.

It's a great idea until you look at how much damage a small smartbomb does. The fight will be long over before any drones are destroyed. Small smartbombs have almost no practical use in EVE.
