Edited by: Kojee on 29/06/2010 00:23:31 So, here's the setup:
You're a pirate in lowsec. You're roaming around looking for targets, and you see a Rupture warp onto the gate you're just coming out of. He jumps, you follow him through and as you jump you check his employment history and see that he's fairly new compared to the rest of us, about a year old. You are able to catch him on the other side and gleefully pop his Rupture, warping away as the little sack of potatoes goes "poof" like a bad smelling fart. You wonder, "Why the hell did that ship die so fast?" You check the fit in the killmail to see that he had an assortment of lasers and artillery fitted, along with a medium shield booster, a cap booster, and a medium armor rep.
Question: Would you attempt to save the newb? IE, would you talk to him at all? Give him some pointers? Maybe send him isk to get a new ship?
Just curious.

Edited by: Zions Child on 29/06/2010 00:25:52 I wouldn't give him a new ship, or isk, but I would convo him and ask him if he wanted pointers. Of course, if he gave me lip, he gets nothing
Edit: In fact, I generally give anyone I've killed pointers, unless, of course, they gave me lip

I would sign him up for my "special class" to teach him what eve is all about.
First lesson would be in an asteroid field in a lowsec system.

Edited by: Dian''h Might on 29/06/2010 00:31:51 Anytime I kill someone with a particularly bad fit I'll usually send them a mail explaining what was bad about the fit and what they could do better to optimize it while keeping in the spirit of the fit they came up with.
The responses to this range from raging hatemail to confusion as to why I'd kill them, then give them fitting advice (these are my favorites) to a general "thanks for the advice".
edit: And I'll usually let them come back for the wreck if they're nice (after I've looted the valuable stuff ofc). If they rage at me and demand their stuff back I'll attempt to scam them for whatever stuff they have left.

The reason I ask is because I was just talking to a coworker today and he mentioned how he played WoW, etc. So I asked him if he had ever heard of EVE or tried it, and he said "I've heard that's pretty much the hardest mmo you could play, right?"
So my concern is that newbs are perhaps dying and get frustrated and then quit the game :P Less meat, less fun for me.

Ditto, it can range from being extremely amusing to downright depressing. A few corps I've decced however seem willing to accept help/pointers, and one even asked if I would join them to help protect and train them
I made even a channel for them to ask Qs in, at least then it takes a little longer for them to pop Signature not appropriate - Adida |

I might send them a ship fit with a brief explanation of the fitting philosophy along with a few links to good info... particularly low sec survival stuff.
I don't want to put people off returning to low sec under the belief its hopeless so I want them to know there are things they can do to be less vulnerable.

If they have a good attitude then I would definitely give them pointers. I have given free ships before, nothing fancy, and some free mods. If they're interested in pvp I'll point them in the direction of Wensley's rifter guide, Skira Rano's piracy guide and similar materials.
When we ransom noobs without money we often give them an opportunity to pay in some other way. This usually takes the form of telling a joke, singing in vent or similar. If the player in question makes an effort we will then let them go.
Of course isk is preferred.

So before I even asked the question, I actually talked to the guy and asked what he was doing in lowsec. He said he was buying skillbooks :/ Gave him some pointers, gave him a link to a fit, and told him to fly smart next time. Then I gave him 7m to buy a new one. He didn't give me **** or anything, just politely answered my questions. Whatevs. 7m is peanuts, and it'll keep another newb subbed up.

If hes a year old and hes fitting artillery and lasers to a rupture hes beyond help
You guys make squeeky noises when you pop, and that's enough motivation as far as I'm concerned. |

That's what I thought. A 1 year old player should be way past the noob stage.

yes and no. The toon's owner may be a raging simpleton or might just be trying a new facet of the EVE experience. ( beyond dying I mean ) This fella might be able to mine, MFG, trade, or whatever is ass off like a pro, but lacks the required skills and experience to fly and fit a combat ship optimally. If the case is the latter I say kudos for at least trying. Let him die a few times and learn a bit and maybe he'll make a more interesting target.
If it's the foremost, helmet on lad and hang on tight to the headboard because it's going to be a rough ride.

I sent a kid 10 or 15 mil to help him out after I killed his failfit vexor in a belt.
The sad thing is I'd been stalking him for a few days trying to catch him. It was rather anti-climactic when I did.

I spend most of my time in 0.0, where the rule is NBSI. But when I *am* in low-sec, I do try to give pointers after a kill if the fit was complete fail.
Never ISK though. Killing people is half the fun. Using their stuff or making a profit is the other half. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

I have replaced ships I've blown up before, last one was an Osprey some kid (he was actually a little kid after talking to him) was mining with in 0.4, but I'm not a pirate, I just like to shoot at anything I see in lowsec :P
...I'm usually the one getting blown up though :P
