Ok i'm just trying to mine aligned to a planet or a moon. They are downward (yes all relative in space). Every time I align to them after I stop moving my ship shifts back to a level plain. basically causes me to take time to align to it again if someone comes to kill my mining barge. What gives?

If you want to be parked in space at an angle, you have to place a jetcan in space and manouver around it. This won't actually help you warp any faster.

Does it take longer to warp away if i'm facing farther away from where i want to go?

Not if your speed is 0m/s.

Most likely no, its more about getting up to 75% of top speed.
You can test this yourself to get the best answer. Initiate a warp from facing a random direction. If you are pointing towards your destination before you hit 75% of top speed then it makes no difference.

Of course you could use the velocity slider to throttle back to a crawl, say 5m/s to stay aligned. It will take a few minutes to slowly drift out of mining laser range. Start at max range, alligned, and do a crawling "flyby" as slow as you can.

Edited by: Iakop on 29/06/2010 00:37:20 To be aligned to a point means to have a speed vector with 75% max speed to that point.
When you are aligned you warp instantly as sonn as you press the warp button.
If your ships speed is 0 it doesn't matter where it points to, takes exactly the same time to accalerate into any direction.
You only need longer when you have speed into a different direction.
edit: i type too slow :(

Or just use the velocity slider to go to 0m/sec and you will keep the ships alignment
Edit: You will need to use the shortcut keys to lower the velocity to do this however... ------------------------------------
