For those who fly them, what do you use them for. Is it mainly a ratting boat with added high utility slots? I am 23 days from the hull, just a little curious as to what I would use it for.

Edited by: Seith Silverstein on 29/06/2010 17:47:04 I can not stress heavily enough that if you don't know what a billion ISK ship is used for, you probably shouldn't be training for it.
EDIT: But, to answer your question, it is normally used as a Level 4 mission pwnmobile. You can fit tractor beams and/or salvagers in the high slots and use the large cargo hold to loot while completing the mission. Since they have massive tanks and huge DPS to go with their tractor beam bonuses, they're great missioning ships.
In theory, you could also use them in PvP. Great damage, great tank, web bonuses on the Kronos and Paladin are awesome - and utility slots for neuts. Just pray you don't run into Rooks/Falcons/Blackbirds, because the Marauder's sensor strength is just awful - you're very easy to jam. That being said, there are better ways to spend a billion ISK on PvP ships. Hell, there are better ways to spend 200million ISK on PvP ships than flying a Marauder.

Edited by: Pesht on 29/06/2010 17:51:39 Incidentally, are marauders stronger enough than a BS to make them good for wormhole complexes? Perhaps able to solo some things a BS couldn't handle? Or are they only useful in the relative safety of level 4 missions due to perhaps their price tag being greater than the advantages over a normal BS when the possibility of losing them comes into play.

I was curious for uses beyond pve, guess realistically there are none.

If you dont know the uses then make sure you reseaerch them now as they are Battleships on steriods that cost orders of magnitude more than there T1 brothers.
Pros More Gank Much Moar Tank EW Bonuses on sum ie TP Bonuses
Cons Low Sensor Strength is the achilles heal of them. Price The fact you have to faction/Deadspace fit them if you want the best gank/tank/time ratio.
Otherwise good ships

@Pesht - I would personally only use them in the relative safety of level 4 missions, but they certainly would perform well in sleeper sites. However, as you said, and I have also stated, their price tags are 8-10x the price tag of a Battleship with only 2-3x the effectiveness (and that's being generous on their effectiveness). It's the logarithmic price/effectiveness scale of Eve - to get twice the effectiveness you need to spend 10x the ISK.
@OP - In PvP, I wouldn't use one, but if you have hundreds of billions of ISK then go for it. Their sensor strength really gives them trouble though.

Edited by: Opertone on 29/06/2010 18:56:02 It is a self sustained ratting boat which can make your mission experience much smoother, just like luxury car makes your ride more comfortable.
Marauders are not meant to be lost. If you loose a marauder you can as well shoot yourself in the head. It costs close to a carrier to fit a marauder for your L4 joy.
In other words, it's a self-esteem token, which mission runners pursuit to get the impression that they are not pathetic carebears. Maradeurs only make missioning easier, and if you are into it, you may as well swap your pimped navy ship (or navy LP offer) for a maradeur of your choice.

This. Oh wait...
Seriously though, I think there's room to argue that being able to blow through missions faster means you have more isk and more time to do something else fun that's a bit less carebear-like. But I haven't run any numbers on how long it takes to earn back the cost of the marauder instead of just using a good Battleship, so they might just well be the EVE equivalent of the +1 Sword of E-peen.
Oh well. I still love my Varg. It helps cover the monthly PLEX pretty quick.

If you're going to drop a billion isk on a ship for pvp. Forget using a marauder and use a pirate faction battleship. It will do around the same damage and has a regular sensor strength. There is no worse feeling than being ground down to wreckage while unable to keep a lock.

You hear this a million times but it all depends on what you want to do.
If you enjoy salvaging while missioning then get the Marauder. I happen to enjoy collecting loot and salvage, it's like having a safe and free second mission while you blast NPCs. My Paladin (600Mil) can fit Tachs easily and I'm cap stable and perma tanking. I'd have to really screw up to lose my ship. My Paladin will really shine though when I can fit T2 Pulses with Scorch. It'll be the ultimate missioning ship.
If you prefer to go the higher DPS route, then I would go toward a Faction or Pirate BS. I have a Navy Armaggedon (380Mil) right now that is cap stable, perma tanks, and does 262 DPS MORE then my Paladin, when I use Pulses. So I think of it as my asault Battleship. I've retired my Abby for this Navy Arm and I'll never look back.
But the king of DPS are the pirate BSs. My next ship is going to be the NIghtmare...;-)
PS I know you can fit ships differently and I can get more DPS out of the Paladin and Navy Arm, but I just like to perma play. I'll start phasing out cap mods and adding more heat sinks soon enough for optimal DPS.

there is a video in the My EVE thread of a guy soloing in a Golem...and doing it quiet efficiently, till he ran into a large gang with logistics, even then he tanked them for a very long time. if u look at it he killed more then he lost but that doesnt get u anywere.

marauders are closer to 500m now, although many are outdone in at least one way by a pirate faction battleship. I've been meaning to buy a kronos for pvp, 90% webs + blasters ftw, plus some highs for a neut or smartbomb,
but yea mostly a pve ship + utility highs.
