My main flies a billion isk+ faction fitted Paladin when doing Lvl4s.
Needless to say, when my Lvl4 agent has a masochistic moment and tries to send me to <0.4, I hit decline.
My standings are approx 9.2 atm, so I have access to a few decent quality Lvl5 agents.
Would you more seasoned carebears consider the extra time needed to solo a Lvl5, plus the added risk of being probed out and having a billion isk ship popped from under you, worth the reward over grinding Lvl4s safely in Empire?

Long answer: It depends on the system and timezone. Short answer: No.

Set a cloaked alt at the gate about 10k away and keep scanning. If you see probes in your area watch the gate. Once your alt sees the gankers show up at the gate, you warp out. Never have to risk your billion+ isk ship.
You have a bigger risk of getting ganked jumping into the .4 - .3 system to run the mission, then getting caught while doing the mission.

This assumes you have multiple accounts.
For a guy like me with one account, it's just not worth the risk solo the way things stand. Folks in my corp aren't interested in level 5's (industrial corp).
I have no problem with this situation though. level 5's are for those who have the balls to run them solo, or for those who enjoy a group situation for running missions.

I'm only about 2 weeks into the game and I run missions in a 0.4 system. Im not very scared either, just watch local, never go afk, havent lost a ship. I run missions in this system every day, for as much time as I have. The system usually has around 30-40 people at peaks, usually around 20-25. Its a great little "mission hub" too.

If you're running level 5s in low-sec successfully, you'll be able to afford to buy a second a count with PLEX.

Than, there are still l5 agents in deep low, that are rather quite, so it could be done.
Downsides. L5 are not that profitable, as some people here suggest. The results are max. 5m per hour above l4 missions. Only way that allows to solo them is either in a carrier (only works for a few missions) or a good nighthawk. In the nighthawk it take ages and good piloting not to get shoot down (Talking > 4h for some missions here). Better go for 2 RR BS. Even than they take long. Forget the bull**** about doing them in 20min. I at least never done any, that took less than 1h with 2 faction fitted marauders and around 50m sp.
Downsides, the moment anyone appears in local, you basically have to stop, since probing you out take 2min. Don't count on seeing the combat probes. Good pilot can make that hard for you. Beside checking directional scanner every 10s can be very distracting, doing a l5 at the same time. Don't forget that there are scramblers too, so don't count on getting out any time you want.
Unless you the love bunny of the local pirate corp and have some backup in the system, do yourself a favor and just don't do it. L5 are dead content currently.

To OP: you don't know a thing about lvl5's right? Because if you did you knew Pala wouldn't last a minute there vs NPC rats (and more than 1 hour vs PC rats). If we are talking about multiple accounts, then it would be viable doing lvl5s with 3 unscannable ships (which are still easy to gank at gates and stations). And you could make the same isk with same effort and less risk tripleboxing lvl4s.

Haven't lost a ship yet? Safe? What system is this? I'd love to come and play with the locals.

Rebellier, (hope I spelled that right) come on out and shoot down my navy comet if you want. I'll be waiting. (On the off note:storyline agent wanted me to run deep into low sec and the reward was horrible!)

In all honesty, low sec is dead in most places. Just don't choose to go near a system near high sec and you'll probably only see the very occasional passerby who is getting from A to B.

I regret to inform you that no lvl 5 agent system is dead. In-fact they're mostly full of pirates fighting for the right to gank the next sucker who brings his unprobable tengus down the pipe
