He bought a subscription through the 21 day trial I sent him and as I understand it when that happens I get 30 days of game time. How do I see if I received my game time?

Account details in account management should show a later expiration date after they've been applied.

That's assuming he bought it within the first two weeks of his trial. If it was during the third week you are out of luck.

Actually he can even apply it after the trial lapses (a friend of mine did this) The two weeks relates to the time he has to start the trial after the invite. Like most of things CCP the wording is misleading as I thought the same as you.
Op, its automatic with no special notice given. If its not showing up then petition it as some have reported it not working for them. You can also check your buddies in your account management to make sure he is listed there.

Is there any reason why you don't get the 30 days when a buddy signs up using steam? I mean, it is stated nowhere. And why should you get punished just because some of your friends like to buy games off of steam?

I didn't get my 30 days when I used a PLEX to activate my 2nd account, I made a petition with both account information, and what was wrong, the next day I logged in I had the 30 days.

Hmm ... okay ... must have skipped that somehow But I still don't get it. Why is it relevant how your buddy subscribed? A subscription is a subscription, isn't it?

It's very relevant if CCP have a financial arrangement with Steam, which they probably have. Steam has it own set of offers which will likely clash.
I personally avoid any third parties with games as there is always a catch.
