tl;dr: here
First of all, this is not a post to shame the enemy of the day. It's not about people self-destructing capitals in combat or anything of that ilk. It's about having a (good) fight in which five ships died and then self-destructing five hundred and five.
To be fair to them, I'm not sure if it's absurd or genius. After all, Father Wiki in the Sky reminds us that long before bees smoked cigars, King Darius of Persia forced the Scythians into destroying the instruments of civilisation, in recorded history's first 'scorched earth' policy. The Persians began to starve and so the Scythians held out.
Anyway.
Wormhole space is still something of an enigma, so when our resident w-space specialists at Guillotine Therapy told me I'd be spending the weekend clinging to a chain of probers like a spacebound Hanzel, I was pleased.
The target happened to be a Cataclysmic Class 6, which gives a monster bonus to remote rep (and shield) at the expense of local tanking. Suits us fine. We dutifully followed KEEN's coverts as they led us deeper down the rabbit hole; first a C1, then a C4, then a C6 and finally the target C6.
A staging pos was anchored and three large faction towers were put into reinforced. During the timer things were then fairly quiet, until a skirmish before downtime on the Sunday. This was a small if enjoyable fight: we had our usual T3 + Guardian blob and for symmetry they had T3 + Basilisks.
As you might expect, in a wormhole with +100% bonus to remote armour and shield transfer, it was a rep-fest. A freshly batphoned-from-deep-sleep Anubis wondered what he'd got himself into when he saw the primaried Proteus repping for shield - but it certainly freed up their damage nicely. Warping Scorpions in at range was a good move too, though we were pretty ECCM'd up.
Finally, after 20minutes, one of their Basilisks broke and, knowing the Guardian rep wouldn't break now, they began to extract. In the end we only killed five ships (two Tech3 and three logistics). Still, the omens were good for a few days of good fighting.
Later that afternoon, I heard that they'd begun to self-destruct ships. That didn't seem particularly out of the ordinary - after all, perhaps they wanted to clear out some flotsam in case a POS fight didn't go their way and goodies fell into our hands. No sense in giving away even the odd free Badger, after all. Then I heard that they'd blown up fifty Drakes. Well, maybe they just really don't like Drakes. I began to envisage some tyrant protagonist of 60s period pieces, ruthlessly culling his warriors until a hero emerged to fight us - a SuperDrake.
But once they started blowing up battleships I decided I'd better log in. After all, these ships had presumably been built in the wormhole and thus would have been difficult to insure properly. By this time, though, the occupants had gone full Fawkes on the situation, blowing up Golems, faction battleships, Zealots, Command ships and anything and everything else that took their fancy too.
We watched, somewhat dumbfounded, as they proceeded to pile up five hundred and five ships wrecks across their towers:

Edited by: Lord Maldoror on 02/07/2010 11:36:02 After 50 ships were down, someone suggested telling them that they might as well fight and we'd probably go home. "No point now" came the reply. I'm not sure what was said 450 ships later since I was asleep by then.
This is not necessarily to speak ill of the enemy: I honestly don't know if these guys are being absurd or awesome. They did have the resources to fight; we counted a total of 54 onlining at different times in the WH and they had at least 6 carriers active too (fate unknown). They also fought well in the one engagement there was. But there's certainly something uncompromising in choosing, on this scale, to scuttle over sail. After so much Roman death we felt obliged to finish off the faction towers after RF, which went without incident.
Then it was the long trip back to Known Space, once again following Curufin's immaculate path of covert alts, while KEEN sorted through the considerable loot. W-Space never disappoints - I've not seen so many collective swords in so many falling chests before. My diagnosis? Ocean Madness, at least a little of it.

Could have been someone doing some kind of "smash-everything-and-run-because-I-can't-carry-it-all" operative, or some other odd manner of theft in the face of loss.
But ya, from what your saying and showing someone went a little off the deep end.

tbh.. this is nothing unexpected.
tl;dr - sounds like a lot of fun :))
however, most wh ops/set ups are run by either carebears or people trying to make isk that can't get a foot hold in 0.0 due to either too hard for them, or having to pay rent of the larger alliances and possibly screwed over.
even if you hada pretty cool fight, most of them already know your set up to kill them, while there set up to run sites. Whats the options... fight a losing battle, or griefing the aggressor?
while you may think fighting is the best option as you want fights, they prob just interested in making isk for some unknown reason (either to fund there mains losing ships in 0.0 warfare, or to ***** more isk)... they know the outcome and prob gained more by making you guys have to pack up and leave with no kills.
The very fact they make stupid isks for this effort to stay in wspace, makes blowing a ton of t1 ships and a handful of faction ships just a hic-up to their long term gains.
And finally, finding big juicy targets is pretty easy in wspace as you have found out, but the effort is often such a ball ache its not worth it when most times wspace dwellors are not set up for pvp, thus already know they will be outplayed. Kinda funny tbh!
the real question is.. with all this effort, why don't you do it in 0.0 were you will find people that want that space for again unknown reasons will actually fight back.... seems to me you were looking for easy pvp.
would be interesting to know your numbers and there numbers. Wh is pretty cool for small fights 3-6 man gang but even a c6 gets crowded when you have 20 odd people trying to claim some isk from the slow spawn rates.

I probably should have made more clear that they picked the one fight there was, by setting up camp on a wormhole exit while watching log in at the staging tower. I suppose the interesting thing is that in a wormhole you'd have 'home advantage' of having your setups tailored to the bonuses - and to some degree they did have this, since with both sides over-tanked, they were able to free up damage slots on lows.
Obviously this sort of thing wouldn't replace our 0.0/LS fights anytime soon; it's more than I'd not seen anyone so diligently SD that much, though it may happen in K-space too and I'm just not aware of it (aside from situations where Istvaan and TT do their superspy thing and press big red buttons)
As someone said though, if you're going to do something, do it properly, and that might as well include scorched earth too. So good luck to them :P ------------------------------ New Video - Ironclad |

Who in 0.0 keeps all of those ships in one pos? Seemed to be a sort of fair fight in numbers and resources (the losers having a lot more then winners).
I have always plotted attacking WH people who have a portal into my space, I guess need a tower to base out of and live in the space in order to do it.

I have counted 54 different people logging in on their side (I may have missed some). We were a bit more than half of their number. Moreover they had 6 carriers and we had 8 Guardians. They also had a Baalhgorn, Scorpion, Falcon, etc ... We just had some Dreads to destroy their POS quickly (wich were useless in a fight due to the self rep divided by two in that cataclysmic wh).
Before they start to self-destruct, we were a bit worried about a potential fight, as they had everything to defeat us (jam, neutra, tanking, numbers and multiple ships, ...).
That could be a great fight. But instead, It has been a great show ;)

Their towers were reinforced and I'm sure the WH exits were camped. So it's either SD all their ships or let you blow up hangars and possibly get drops. They knew they weren't going to beat you so why give you free ships too?

This makes sense. If there is only 1 entrance to the Wormhole, all 3 of their Faction towers are already in reinforced, and your characters who get podded end up in Empire unable to assist in further fighting and leaving all those valuable ships and mods hanging bare-assed out in space, I'd start destroying them too.
Not to mention we don't know much about your numbers and disposition. Its entirely possible that while there were 54 individual pilots in the wormhole, they might not ever be online all at once, and you may have had a distinct numerical advantage most of the time which impacted the decision to self destruct their assets before you could shanghai them.

Not saying they were wrong to, or cowardly to, though. Initially they were camping WH exits while the staging tower was up and we certainly didn't have enough to camp around the clock (30 guys) or anything like that. But it's hard for them to know that & as the guy said above, hard to do the logistics of a big move. It's just that since this doesn't happen much elsewhere (at least from our experience, since 0.0 and LS towers would never contain so much, it makes the WH experience different. ------------------------------ New Video - Ironclad |
