Hello New Eden! o/
When you are out there on the weekly mining op... Or eye balling that juicy freighter passing through the jita gate. Or flying through Nullsec blasting the Danger zone in the background...
What VoIP (Voice over IP) programs are you and your corporations using nowadays?
Ventrilo? Teamspeak? Mumble? Mohawk? In-game voice?
I preferably don't fly with people unless we are on comms.
Just curious!

Personally I have a..."thing".. about people online hearing my voice. It's totally irrational and totally stupid and it happens to be a huge drawback but I just can't seem to get over it.
So, despite them not really being around any longer and after all these years, Sorry IRON, I would have made a better Bomber Wing Commander if I'd only used voice comms.. Also sorry the people who got podded because of that.. ______________________________________________

Lol totally opposite situation here, yet the result is same... see, I don't want to hear any more of other people voices (except for my family and close rl friends ofc) when I get back home from work because I'm usually getting quite enough of that noise during the day. I accept to bother with earphones and mic only in case there's something REALLY big going on in game, otherwise I'm staying away from voice comms as far as possible.
Oh and btw Ventrilo ftw!

Currently use TS3 because my alliance uses it. Would use Mumble if the decision was mine.

TS3 here, although I wish we could get an OOG EVE Voice client, as it shows great potential, but unfortunately it seems to be one of "those" neglected projects ============================ 2003 and still alive! |

I use vent and the reason why kind of ****es me off, I will explain.
You aren't a srsbsns gamer w/o voice chat. But TS and TS2 did not allow you to configure other peoples voices. So we (clans then guilds that I was in) always used vent. Which is ironic because you aren't srsbsns anything if you cant configure your sound.
Anyway I use linux but not ubuntu. ubuntu is like the vista of linux and vent doesn't work correctly in ubuntu with a lot of souncards. Anyway TS has a native client for linux so most *nixers use TS. I usually have a copy installed just in case but dont have one now. This is clearly a signature. |

I use Ventrillo, TS3, or EvE-voice (this is fun to play with), especially for voice RP.

I don't really find it essential to most of my gaming, and prefer not to chat on my computer like a teenage girl on the phone.
But the times i absolutely have to use it, i just use the in game options.

Edited by: Usul Atreides on 02/07/2010 19:08:36 I prefer Ventrilo.
TS2 is a pile of balls - the codecs suck. Like listening to someone through a muffler. TS3 seems fairly on par with vent now.
Mumble is apparently alright.

TS2 was usually much easier to use and understand than Vent was. Downside was the lack of options and the low-quality (hence low bandwidth) codecs. Vent had the better codecs and the ability to modify volume levels of fellow loud-mouths. Sadly, the options weren't always simple or intuitive. Move on to TS3 (beta). TS3 keeps most of the simplicity of TS2, but throws in most of the lusted-after gizmos of Vent as well as a better collection of audio codecs. Downside on TS3 is on the server end. If the server admins don't know what they're doing, things get rather FUBARed in no time. _______________________________

In my humble opinion, Ventrilo has lagged behind Teamspeak now with Teamspeak 3 out. It does automatic normalization, you don't have to set up a special filter for it. Also I am using Vista and the Ventrilo filters doesn't work at all if you are not administrator and is running Vent as administrator, so unless you do that, no normalization. The security features of TS3 are better than in Ventrilo and the client is just so much cleaner and nicer.
I pretty much never use the in game voice client, primarily because it is only available in game, and secondly because it doesn't want to play nice with my ISP's VOIP solution, other people can't hear you or other weirdness.

You forgot to mention that TS3 has no login/password authentication and can't be transparently integrated into existing authorization schemes. TS devs jumped over their own heads, unfortunately, creating software that has no real application, unless handled in an unusual (for average user) way.
P.S. I don't care. TS2, Vent, TS3, whatever is need for the day. Prefer TS2, it gives me 90% of the tools I need without crap I don't need. (And codecs can be improved, the latest speex versions works allright, especially if you adjust the bandwidth limiter in options - what many people forgot and then blaming about crappy codecs where they are guilty themselves) -- Thanks CCP for cu |

I also like Mumble, even though I don't talk with anyone using it at the moment.

Usually Vent, but EVE-Voice can be amusing.
For example, EVE-Voice, set voice thing to 'female to male' "PICK UP THAT CAN, CITIZEN!" ????? PROFIT!

I dont think EVE Voice is used anywhere near as much as it should be.
If CCP would make this an OOG application with some admin controls, i think it would be an instant hit.
Currently if your looking for security in voice comms you have to use an API based web program to link API to TS / Ventrilo etc. Its a pain in the ass that could be vastly improved upon by an OOG version of EVE Voice.
People dont want to use it in game ( at least big alliances dont ) because the game has a tendency to crash in larger fights
( oh no i didnt )

I too would like to mention that EVE Voice has a lot of potential. EVE Voice integrates directly into the fleet structure which can be convenient at times.
Unfortunately, everything that EVE Voice offers is undone by the fact that it crashes when EVE crashes or disconnects. ----------
