Anyone know why the price of bacteria hit the floor in about 24 hours? Will it spike back up? I foolishly invested and tried to trade a load of it.
Would it be better to just cut losses and sell at current prices?

Like ALL PI, you have to get in and out at the right time. There is not enough production spread evenly across EVE to stabilize the market. So people keep jumping back and forth.. They see one day it's worth x amount and think that's pretty high I'll get in on that.. So they start producing but people who already have an inventory start dumping.
This will happen for a while a real seesaw effect between when the market runs thin and price rises and people dumping their inventories.
Best piece of advance, just hold whatever you've purchased and wait it out until it spikes again. That's what everyone else is doing.
I mean the famed "Guidance Systems" saw over 150mil units purchased between Tryannis being released NPCs stopped selling. However, since NPCs have stopped selling only about 40 million units have been sold in the forge.. So where is the extra 110mil units?
You guessed it... People are holding on to their inventory because speculation is still happening, everyone expects to get higher so they hold it. When it finally gets to the point where it holding onto millions of units of stuff and the price just isn't getting any higher they'll start dumping which will drag others down with it so the market crashes.
Even though Bacteria is a PI only item the effect is the same. Only the supply doesn't come from NPCs and Speculation it comes from people who one saw Bacteria was a good price, started to harvest it, the price crashed and instead of selling out for whatever they can get, they simple hold it, and move onto the now current "NICE" priced item. I know of 3 people that do that on a large scale in WHs... I can imagine a lot others are doing the same.

All the "new" PI's - the ones that weren't traded as npc goods before - got a very high price when they just entered, then fell within a few days. Many then had a second spike, and may have a third, and slowly settle at whatever price they will have in the future. So try to sit it out.
If it is any consolation I have several million units of Bacteria myself ----------------------- "Signatures" trader chatroom / Hydra Investment Fund |

This is the first time I have posted on eve insider at all, and have no alts. Bacteria was my first big(ish) investment in eve and it bit me hard. But I am not deterred.

NEVER get deterred... People make good and bad choices all the time sometimes it works out really well, others not so much. I speculated on a few different things, while I did make ISK off them all, I wish I had focused on one after the fact.
A good way to look at market speculation is how much cashflow is happening. Speculation is about max flow, manipulation and speculation kinda go hand and hand. Most market stuff is all about how much you can stand before you simple have to sell out. Manipulators like to take control of the market buy at one price, sell at another, don't let anyone else get in your way. Speculators feed off the manipulators, When the manipulator crashes the market, the speculator jumps in. But by then the manipulator is already out of the market (They sold out at a price they liked crashing the market) sometimes they'll go back in, other times they'll move on.
The main deal with speculators is selling out before the manipulators sell out, if they are jacking up the market. Now they both need each other as well. Speculators see the manipulators jacking up the market so they jump on, some even come to the forums and post how good an item is... coughguidancesystemscough they want the market up as high as they can before they dump their massive inventory of the item. The manipulator needs the speculators to keep placing buy orders and buy their inventory etc. Eventually when either one of them sells out the other kinda losses out unless the impact wasn't big enough to effect the progress.
I'm guessing you where the one that lost out. Which is why I recommend just holding it for a few days see how the market recovers.

To derisk PI I've personally being investing in a wide portfilio of PI goods, seems to be working, though some stuff takes forever to turn over (where i'm trading, not Jita).
Since I'm new the amounts have been small, but I don't see how that would change much with a bigger wallet as you should set your risk based off how you want to trade rather than how much money you have.
FYI i've been spreading in the P1 and P2 areas.

Take a look at more than one region and you'll understand what is happening |

What's happening is a compression effect. Not much is on sale in other market hubs for PI stuff. Which means Jita will become the only place suppliers go to sell their materials... Well one can only hope..

It really takes a lot of effort to lose money in Eve, congratulations.
