Jeez.
I was a massive fan of the UFO/ XCOM games, and loved them to death. They then brought out stupid stuff like Enforcer which didn't have much to do with the original, and now this which has nothing to do with it whatsoever.
Slap on the XCOM name to try and get some sales, very lame.
I am disappoint.

This is not X-Com.
Much like this also isn't X-Com.
I think the comparison is apt. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Who are these people that decide that black smoke, slime, whatever blob moving about is scary?
That game looked like ****, I mean at first it looked promising, then the slime... I'd much rather seen 'brains' hiding in the closets, turning people inside out with their tentacles.

hehe it took me about 2 months on my 386 to finish x-com terror from the deep. The sounds in that game made it so creepy.. It was awsome.. Do not click this ad. |

would it have been so hard to just remake the game properly?
my changes other than graphics to the original X-Com would have been. Shotguns-everyone likely had a dude wait at a door for the alien to open it, Shotgun would do huge damage but only work 1-2 squares away. Tazers-Same idea as that stun wand thingy from the original but could be used at range. of course the stunbomb launcher would still be the final target. Air Strikes-if you keep your interceptors on "Patrol" vs "Go Home" when you land the troop ship one of your move options would be to call down an air strike. when you end the turn the strike would happen. if no interceptors where on station the strike option would not be there.

Absolutely. The Terror missions added an extra dimension, having to save ports or even ships from alien incursion, desperately trying to avoid night missions.
You feel you are getting the upper hand, and then you run up against Lobstermen for the first time. You realise your weapons really aren't up to the job anymore...

Seriously, considering how many possible things they could of done with the basic game in a new gen. It is so open to possibilities and has so mush room for developing depth, and game play, and they they go and make a completely different generic game, from scratch, that has nothing at all to do with the name... It boggles the mind. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

What does that video have to do with X-Com? The aliens are different, the gameplay is different, the story is different, everything is different. And rubbish. Different and rubbish. ____________________

They should not have named it XCOM but 2K is a reasonably reliable studio so I am optimistic it might be good as just a regular game...
Also, it looks a LOT like Bioshock. If that dev team, or even parts of that dev team are behind this game then it is going to be at the very least worth playing.
I am expecting Bioshock but with aliens. I just hope they optimize the graphics/code a little because the framerate was down below 20 for a few seconds in that video, not good.

I've heard the base building and research etc is still in the new one, it's more that the ground combat style has been changed to an FPS and scaled back to a single city rather than global.

The game looks ok. Is it worthy of the XCOM label, probably not. One of the joys of XCOM was the nearly completely destructible battlescapes, but I'm guessing this game is essentially a generic shooter with a 50s alien twist. The black water stuff looks inspired by venom off spiderman, crossed with the black oil from the x-files.
Wheres the destructible environment. I want to spam blaster bombs and level hills cos theres one sectoid camped behind a tree. Only to have the guy with a blaster bomb get mind controlled, spin around and nail the crew in the Skyranger leaving me with 2 panicing recruits to complete the mission. Dammit may have to load up XCOM again.

How many others adopted the russian philosophy towards your crew?
Taking in a ****load of troops then arming them all with heavy explosives, setting them to blow before they even got off the ship as to go scorched earth on the mofos if they turned one of your people.
'One goes in with bomb, if one get turned, other run like hell!'

have to agree, every game I play these days is a console port with big chunky UI and repetitive game play.

I do not get it, why do they have to slap the XCOM-Name on this abomination. Most console gamers do not know or do not care about the old XCOM games the entire gameplay and even the backstory is completely different from the original series.
What next, maybe a new game with the name Wing Commander and gameplay involving a squadron of magic unicorn riders in a hentai fantasy setting?

It's interesting.
I don't find the setting totally inappropriate to alien hunting and the x-com games did roll the setting on.
It reminds me of that invaders programme.
Gameplay wise I'm hoping it has more tactical elements or it's a really poor match.
