Edited by: Keebrev on 08/07/2010 17:49:41 Hello all,
I subbed another account so I can do combat while using my main for other things. I was wondering, can anyone give me some tips on a speed tanking career? The idea of small and fast ships that survive with their speed appeals to me. What I am mostly interested in, is doing this from short range. Basicly, if I make a fresh character, I want to stay Caldari focused if possible, what should be the first ship to get/use, and what to work towards, after that, etc etc etc.
I read that the Crow is a really good ship for speed tanking, but also that it's used for long range, missiles. Are there ships I could use to speed tank, but are short range combat ships?
All advise is welcome!

The Angel Cartel have the Dramiel and the Daredevil, which require minimal skills of 2 races to sit in, but are quite powerful when fully skilled and implanted.
Minmatar have the fastest and most agile ships, hence they arguably have the best interceptors: the Claw and Stilleto. The Caldari line-up is considered to be at the bottom of the heap, primarily because of their poor damage.
Given that it takes 8 days or less to train Frigate 5, most people train for more than one race of frigate.

Just note those are both quite expensive so just know that you might to want to start in something cheaper if you don't have a big wallet to replace them often. This is especially true to pvp, I have seen plenty of losses of people trying to use faction frigates and only getting killed in them. They can take some experience to use efficiently.
I am not saying this to put you off of them. Just know that insurance doesn't cover their cost.

Interceptors are quite cheap and are really "the" ship class for speed. They're also quite cheap. I fly an Ares occasionally and as I recall it's like 9 mil for the ship and a 4-5 more mil for the fittings or something like that. A lot of corps/alliances also REALLY want interceptor pilots and will often reimburse them almost fully if not fully.

Edited by: Mocane Smith on 09/07/2010 06:17:27 Thanks for the responses, the Dramiel and Daredevil look very nice, and I think that with my mining main, I can afford it, if the ship gets destroyed, I would like some more information on these faction ships though :D How do I exactly get those? I have no real experience with factions.

Edited by: stannoman on 09/07/2010 08:42:40 Wow that is really expensive, 80-100mill lol. Nah I can not afford such thing yet. I will use an interceptor for a while then. Wich would you recommend for speed tanking, and great for short range? And what loadout would you suggest with this?
PS: Lol it seems I keep posting with different chars, anyway, it's still me :D

The taranis has a high number of hitpoints compared to other interceptors and fitting a t2 damage control gives it a relativly high ehp for an interceptor. The taranis makes a good solo gank interceptor for taking out smaller targets or providning both tackle and dps assistance to small gangs. Fighting with one ussualy involves overheating your blasters and praying that whatever you cought dies before either your guns or your ship melts.
Keep in mind that in geting close enough to use shorter range weapons such as blasters you are puting youself within enemy web/scram range which is a bad thing if you need to disengage. For that reson the ares might make a bwtter choice for a fleet support scout/tackle as it can jam and do dmg from outside the tackle range of most ships

Ah thanks for the advise, Hmm, would you be able to attach a good loadout to that theory :D?
