(No, this isn't a "roll back Dominion!!1!" rant post, sorry.)
I joined after Dominion was already out and have gotten into nullsec and I'm fascinated by all of the associated politics and especially how the sovereignty mechanics influence things. Personally I like how the sov mechanics are now, but I never did quite understand how the old sov mechanics worked, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.
I know it had something to do with POSes, but beyond that I have no idea. Anyone care to explain it or point me towards a good article on it?

Pre Dominion it was based on active POSs in a system.
Whoever had the most Large Towers had sov. If no Large Towers, it was whoever had the most Medium Towers. If no large or Medium Towers it was whoever had the most Small Towers.
You clicked a box on the tower to claim sov (so you could have them not count). Then it took 7 days for that tower I think to count (might of been 7 days from anchoring).
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts.

Also there was constellation sovereignty.
If you held sov in every system in a constellation you could make the towers of the "constellation capital" quite literally invulnerable. It had to have a station and a whole bunch of other stuff too. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Alot of people whinge about how the current system is terrible (not to say it's the best thing since sliced bread) however the old sov. system was also a massive nap fest.
To take territory already owned by another alliance/corp/whatever you needed to take down their pos's that determined soveriegnty in the system. This meant, for some large "deathstar" pos's, hours of pos bashing, getting it into reinforced and coming back later to try and take it down for good.
Once a certain pos was put into "reo" the defending camp may chose to try and save the pos and form a counter-fleet to save said reo'd pos. This entailed more super-fun-happy-filled hours of pos repping with carriers, logistics or whatever had a remote rep on hand. Indeed, pos repping was about as fun as it sounds considering the massive chunks of hp needed to fix pos guns etc. The best thing was the fights that may occur near each pos between the defenders and atackers, though this is hardly a selling point (huge and laggy, though with greater numbers than current fights experince before lag got out of hand). Alot of the time one side would simply concede to the other (e.g. avoid the superior defending fleet or give up to the superior attacking fleet)
Inconveneint timezone comparisons often necesitated alarm ops to counter a fleet/pos bash/save a pos at ridiculous times making sov warfare a very un-fun way of playing an otherwise excellent game.
The current system may also necesitate huge blobs and un-cool lag etc. but the old system was definately not a great alternative.
