I have only 3 planets at the moment. Each planet is producing one P1 good. I have silicon, precious metals, and biomass. I'm harvesting way out in 0.1 space because I wanted more bang for my buck. My plan was to make P1's in 0.1 space, haul them to high sec (Near a trade hub) and either sell them or use them to manufacture P2 or P3 materials (Should it be profitable and worth the effort)
But I now realize that moving the P1's from 0.1 space to high sec is actually more maintenance than restarting the extractors. A lot more maintenance. I'm pulling over 3,000 m3 of P1's out of each planet every day. I don't mind restarting 27 extractors twice a day, but doing the low->high sec haul every day in an industrial was not part of my plan. It seems stupid to contract it out, given that the profit/weight ratio is terrible.
Anyone else feel that PI materials are far too dense? I hear people claiming its a click fest, but for me 5 clicks = 146 m3 worth of crap. It doesn't take many clicks until now I gotta make the 'trip'.
Anyone overcome this blockade yet?

Accumulate all of your p1s in the nearest high-sec system. Learn how to fly an Orca or Freighter.
Add an extra launch pad to each colony to double the time it takes to fill up.

Edited by: Maluminse on 09/07/2010 15:45:34 I suppose you could use the storage area and only do it every few days. If you really have a problem with it, eith move closer to high sec or create more p2 or slow down your extraction. Those are really your only options, and are part of the logistical challenges of PI.
And, of course, what Drox said.

I guess you are experiencing the "drawback" of higher density of lowsec.
Have you tried just sending the stuff to the customs house while flying through your losec system and not actually picking it up right away? You could just move everything from launchpad to customs and then come by with a super huge industrial every few days.

Don't forget about using the Customs Office for temporary storage too.

I can fly through lo-sec and dump it in the customs house yeah. No problem. But like I said above, the stockpile gets huge very quickly. If I keep dumping into the customs house, after 7 days It'll be full and I'll have 75,000 m3 of P1's to move. I don't want to spend Saturday doing 10 trips with an industrial just to sell my PI materials.
This is only 3 planets worth. I can't even imagine what the 18 planet players are experiencing...
One thing I thought of is to buy P1's from high sec and haul them to lo-sec. Then use my produced P1's + the purchased P1's to make P2's. Seeing as right now I have the pricey materials, I could likely setup a 4th planet to convert P1's into P2's. But this doesn't help me very much because hauling the P1's to low sec is not only stupid, but is in itself hauling. And the compression rate of P1's to P2's is quite lackluster. I would be much better off simply setting up an additional extraction planet and contracting the deliveries out for 1/3rd of my total revenue.
I guess that is why a lot of P2's are selling for less than cost, because P1's are simply far too difficult to move around. Players would rather make a little bit less ISK/hr and to reduce the 'transport maintenance'.
I still think PI materials are far too heavy for anyone to deal with. Yeah a freighter works, but this is supposed to be easy to enter and make income here. Freighters are not cheap nor is the skill easily attainable.

Move your operations closer to your sale point, always make p2 items = more value for you since there's less moving + more storage. Even upgrading your industrial would cut down trips. My badger2 can fit 13k m3 +
There's numerous ways around this problem. Just like any industry in existence, there is an added cost for having your production facilities far from your market. Sure, PI is easy to get started with, but no one said you wouldn't have to make some additional inputs (ie: bigger industrial?) to make the iskies.

Get a real industrial and make only 2-3 trips

Get another temperate planet around there, and process to P2 or P3 right there. The volume will go down, so you have less to carry around.
Other than that, you get better yield, but you have to move it. I see nothing wrong there. If you want more convenience, put the extractors in high sec.

Upgrade to P2s out there.. saves you a truckload of hauling.
I currently run 5 planets in low sec, and only need to drop by once every week or so, doing a single trip trhough a few systems, pick up stuff, drop off stuff, pick up more stuff, drop off more stuff, etc.. and go back to high sec with my booty

Check out this spreadsheet for calculating cargo space. (I am not the original author, you can find it here on the forums, the values filled in are what I am using).
Still, you are looking at 3 trips with that.

A much more efficient way to use PI is to build p2 or even p3 products on a single planet, so you use only a fraction of the space on an industrial that p0 or p1 products use.
That way, you can produce for a week or more before having to haul.
Also, you are now hauling a high value product, so you might have 100m or more per trip, depending on what you are making. Part of the game is to figure out what sells for good money.
I am not telling you what to make, as I really do not want your and 1000 other players' competition. But, it is there for you. Good luck.
