I've been pondering since starting a few weeks ago which race's ships to fly. I am well aware that all of the races have pros and cons, but it's still really hard to choose. Here's what I've boiled it down to.
Gallente- Pros: Being able to use drones would help with both PvE and PvP. Cons: I hate being in short range . Drones are also sorta a pain to use.
Caldari- Pros: Great mission runners. Cons: I don't want to just do ECM in fleets.
Minmitar- Pros: From what I gather, they can switch ammo types like Caldari, which would make them good for PvE. I also hear they are great for PvP. Cons: High amount of SP is needed. I have also heard Minmitar are a lot harder to play.
Amarr (What I am mostly playing right now)- Pros: Supposedly great for PvE and PvP due to high damage and armor. Being able to instantly switch ammo is nice as well. Cons: Resistances . I can't kill anything outside of Amarr space with ease.
Basically, I want something I can PvE and PvP with effectively. I just recently started the game, so I don't have quite the knowledge I need to make an informed decision.

Tbh it sounds like amarr is the race for you, and amarr do work well against serpentis rats to, so u can do missions in gallente space if u want (angels and guristas are a bit worse)
Caldari are still the king of pve when u have low sp, but thats about the only good side to caldari these days, though they do have some fun close range ships u can fly if you feel crazy.
Minmatar is as you say very skill intensive, but imo its the most fun race to fly with gallente coming close second (personal opinion of course)

I'd recommend Gallente/Minmatar.
Great ships once you cross train. I'd start gallente as they seem to me to be the best pve/pvp combo race. Not as gifted at either as the caldari/minmatar respectively, but have the ships and weapons and bonuses to be very good at both. Once you reach true PvP status you will be able to PvE effectively with any of the races and you'll simply train the race specific ship and weapon skills to fill out your PvP specialist minmatar skills.
Amarr seems bada$$, I have never flown Amarr so I can't speak from true experience. Amarr certainly does have the capacity to both pve and pvp very well. I think they are a bit more complex tactically and fitting wise. I sort of view Amarr as a different flavor of Gallente.

With the hard nerf to ECM, you likely won't be in an "ecm fleet", unless you want to fly a Falcon that bad.
Drakes and Ravens are amazing for both PvE and PvP, and there are plenty of other ships that are viable (ceptors, recons, HiCs).
Loss (noun): detriment, disadvantage, or deprivation from failure to keep, have, or get: to bear the loss of a robbery.

Im stuck between Amarr and Minmitar.
Amarr + Unlimited ammo, Lasers, Shiny - Only 2 damage types
Minnie + Badass - extremely skill intensive
Any tips? I mostly fly amarr on this guy but I dont have learning skills so im getting an alt up with those on it... Also the only caps I would fly later are the Amarr caps... I live in Guristas space though... Any thoughts?

Edited by: Queen Jane on 10/07/2010 18:29:55 When in doubt stick with what you're flying already. Years down the road you will have filled out your core skills and cross training to something else won't take eons. Learn to fly what you have now well and you'll be in a better shape to fly other things later.
That said, for anyone who wants all-around goodness in the early goings, minmatar is king. You get the cheapest effective pvp ship around (Rifter), a highly competetive cruiser lineup, great bc, the most effective industrial (mammoth) without training to indy V (iteron is better at that point, but that's a hell of a lot of training for an indy when you aren't a hauler/trader by choice), AND the flat-out best weapon systems in the game (projecties) as your baseline. The only exception to minmatar awsomeness is the big ships, battleship and up is the realm of Amarr, almost to the exclusion of anything else. Amarr cap ships are stupid good, and if that's a goal you are definitely wanting to fly Amarr for the long-term.

I'd say go Gallente. You'll have a chance to try out all the aspects of the game with this race, it performs well in any job due to how great the drone ships are. You only have to focus on your gunnery and armor tanking skills (ev'rybody have to train drones) and you can PvP, run missions, explore etc.
Untill you reach 0.0 space PvP operations, want to play a support role or you'll want to go live in a wormhole. you'll be fine.

Minmatar will give you best in class for all subcaps, and leads on to Angel ships which are the most overpowered ships in this game.

I'd suggest starting with Caldari. You can get yourself sorted on the isk-making front very quickly, allowing you to easily support yourself from a young age. As far as PVP is concerned, there are a number of non-ewar ships which would then require minimal extra training to be effective in pvp. For starters, you have the Merlin, which can be a ruggedly effective little frigate. The Drake is an obvious candidate here, either as the infamous HAMDrake, or the more versatile HML fitted variant, although the Caracal is also a solid contender -either for mid/long range sniping or for sweeping frigates out of space. Once you have the basics covered, crosstrain to Minmatar. You will find that a lot of the skills which make the Caldari work prove to be equally useful here. Most Minmatar ships have at least a few missile hardpoints, and shield tanking Rifters, Ruptures and Hurricanes allows you to put out a ludicrous amount of dps.
