Or should every gate ganka and the like instantly destroy all comers? Personally, i believe that pirates should offer a semi reasonable ransom, and the person has to turn back. Aye?

A lot of ships coming through gates are on autopilot. Not to mention, many players may not be monitoring the local channel. Why should a pirate pay the 100 ISK fee to try and initiate a conversation in the short time he has before the prey warps away?
I'm not exactly fond of the "gate ganking" style of piracy, but I don't expect anyone who plays in such a manner to have any sort of manners, decency, or sense of fair play. They aren't looking for a challenging hunt. They're looking to blow up people's ships for fun, and maybe a little loot.
You can't expect a person to change his nature simply to suit your own sense of decorum. Gate gankers are the bottom feeders of the pirate community, and I highly doubt they consider that a bad thing.

You can always chat over local for free... but i guess. I was gate ganked by fairlane and his merry band of fellows. Shoulda hid longer in the belts, they were still looking for me pod when it happened. (running other direction)

For the fellow like me that doesn't always have the channel window open, how is a pirate supposed to convey his demands, other than a private conversation? Relying on the local channel is unwise in the gate ganking business.

Ransoms used to be the norm, but then ppl started cheating their way out of them with game exploits, like BMs and logoffs.
So gate ganking is the best you can expect.

A pirate should do nothing, but he can do anything.
That said, ransoms are far more elegant. Of course, they're not feasible in all situations. Gate camping is inelegant and destructive, but due to how the game is, it is one mode of pirate operation.

A griefer complaining that LOGGING OFF is an exploit? That's just what I would expect, but it's still the most comical thing I've heard all day. The real problem is that sentry guns don't have the range to make griefers hunt for their mark.
It's funny how the griefers always cry exploit when carebears do anything to save themselves from being harassed, but when griefers employ the same "exploits," they consider it "tactics" or "play style."

Most of us offer ransomes. My prices are stated on my bio, so while your cloaked you have a chanced to check it out and type in local if you want to pay. Just that some ppl don't understand that we scramble/web your ship no matter what, to make sure payment is received in full, otherwise you get popped.
Greifing doesn't exist in low sec space. You all got the warning window so don't complain.

Well in response to this....Its my thought that depending on the circumstances a randsom would be prudent if your forces are able web the target, and scramble, and in local give him 15 secs to respond in some way. I've seen people log off or loose connection. Seemed to take about 30-40 secs to warp and leave the game, tho I've never actually counted. In anycase give your randsom, if they refuse or don't respond, blow their ship. Scramble their pod, randsom again, if no response, pod them. Personally I think it would be more profitable goin after someone in a belt. Passive target if they don't warp away, cargo scan, then make your demands based on what they're carrying if anything. I'm not a pirate.....but I can't say I haven't thought about it.

Why don't pirates ransom? Simple, 90% of people don't pay, and it's a pain.
I personaly still ransom people when I can, but only pods. Most ships are stacking lots of warp stabs, or just logoff when they see you. On the rare occurance that you do catch and ransom a ship, they will almost never pay. Ship ransoming is pretty dead.
Pods are another story, as long as the guy doesn't have instant jumps or a quick hand. Mostly I just ransom for a flat fee of 20m, although what with skyhigh implant prices maybe we could start asking for a little more .
So, why do pirates not ransom? Warp stabs, instant jumps and people who log off. Ganking is so much easier.

Edited by: RollinDutchMasters on 18/12/2004 13:03:54 Ransom piracy was obliterated by unintentional side effects of changes to the game mechanics. It will not be back without a massive overhaul of several systems in the game.

You think it would be because you have never tried it. Battleships will turn on a tank and log. Cruisers will laugh at you and take their insurance. If you want to try it, fine. But until you do, stop making suggustions that are patently absurd about how to pirate 'properly'.
