Hey I know we always need people for a mass test but sometimes the numbers lack. So how about this, if we can get 500+ people for 3 mass tests, The dev staff has to take a group photo with all of them wearing traditional tartans.
Or better yet, singing HTFU permaband while wearing traditional tartans. You would get a ton of testers just for the opprotunity to see this.

Tartan is a woven pattern; most tartans come from Scottish clans, and are accredited to a specific clan (so all from the same clan would wear the same). As far as I know there really haven't been any icelandic traditional tartans; but if somebody knows otherwise please let me know. Also, were you meaning kilts, not tartan? If so the same really applies - as far as I know kilts aren't Icelandic dress.
But yeh, tartan is just a weave pattern - trust me, I'm Scottish.

Why should I do QA for something I have to pay for.
Give me 1 month free and out of that month I would spend 3 days of them doing some QA, deal?

speaking from experience, I have wanted to log on sisi before but couldn't be bothered to figure out how. If it was a built in option to be able to log on from the normal client I think more people would check it out.

There is a walkthrough for connecting to the test server in the test server feedback forum.
Next - why isnt it shared with the tq client?
SiSi is an experimental server with experimental serverside and client side patches. If you were to use the same client, you would not be able to log into TQ So to avoid killing your main eve and functions they have you make a copy of your eve folder to avoid that issue.
Reimbursement - you dont need sp seriously 1 hour out of yoru day is not worth 1 days worth of sp or a ton of isk, how ever if you have the skills, they do hand out faction ships to play with and if you join the testing alliance you can get super caps to play around in.
Most important this is for our benifit, and if you read the dev blogs they have been fixing a good portion of the client side stuff and are continuing to work on that and server side stuff to kill the lag.
X up for the raid against lag!

A working autopatcher plus a manned moveme (or that awesome movemebot) channel would work best. At the moment you need a third party site to find the correct patch most of the time.

Maybe they could make the server lag really really badly during fleet fights? I mean such horrible lag that people affected would lose ships, or even be unable to load grids!
For serious: **** 'em. They don't want to log in? Don't bother. Let them moan on the forums, none of them have enough going on in their lives to fill the 12 hour a day hole quitting eve would leave.

I like the idea of having the devs post a fun pic or something if they get the people they need for the masstest.
To all the people saying, I want SPs if I help with thesting, I say to you....
If the only reason you would do it is for free Sillpoints, then you are really not the people that CCP are looking for.
If CCP offer SPs for testing attendance, then all they are going to get is a testserver full of AFK minmaxers.

And atm, we have a normal server full of AFK people (at least when two larger fleets meet).
I too wont consider coming unless I get smth in return. The promise of less lag during fleet fights is all nice and shiny but CCP kinda promised that for 3 years and all they did was release Dominion, which made it worse.

Who the **** cares about that? Don't you find enough pictures of men in kilts on the internet to satisfy your needs?
But here's a different proposal that could encourage people to go to the tests:
- Announce exactly one issue that will be tested
- Deliver a thorough follow-up on the test-resulst (not just a lol average FPS was 13.4)
- Deliver a patch the improves this one specific issue on the production system within a reasonable time-frame (let's say 1 month?)
By one issue I don't mean "Lag" that's not a issue you can actually work on. Something like "traffic control", "drones VS POS tower", "crazy catalyst", "tractor beam confusion", etc.
Best way to make people have faith is always "predict and deliver". But I guess that's too close to the "polish patrol team" the CSM suggested and thus we won't see that.

How about something like "You participated in a 1 hour test on Singularity, for spending that time helping improve the game here is X amount of X" Say game time, or SP, or ISK. Some real incentive to participate, and sort of a "thank you" for helping us find bugs.
Just saying :) [url=http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/combat_record.php?type=player&name=RatKnight1][/u |

I have been on testserver a few times... but...
1) it's a struggle to make it to work 2) theres NO autopatcher that works, so you often has to download a whole new build.
For the above resons, i'd rather play EVE on the REAL server, instead of wasting a full day in order to set up a test build, that MAY work for a week... then you'll need to do it all over.
That the skills are a month or 5 behind, really doesnt help the situation. What I could use the test server for, is how to fit a ship i just trained for. That option is not available.
If CCP expect the regular players to visit test or help in a mass test, FIX the above, and there'll be more than 40 ppl on that server.

Yes that's a good idea. Mass test usually have that large fleet fights, put a GM/BH/DEV in a flagship (officer fitted Titan or MS), give everyone, who is on the killmail of the flagship a 50k SP pool present on TQ. This would however bring more people to masstest than CCP wants, don't think SiSi can handle fleetfights with 10k players involved.

hi,
1. lack of incentive. I barely have time to achieve the things i need to on TQ let alone test. Give me a reason to invest time and energy into making the game i play better.
2. Terrible "route to the testserver." Seriously would it be so hard to have a hardlink "download test server" somewhere? One that didnt try and install over TQ eve?
3. better autopatching for users of test. I use test maybe once a year. I would use it more but everytime I go back i discover i need a complete re-install: cba.
4. Some indication (again would a page on here be so hard?) of what CCP are currently working on fix-wise and what previous tests have achieved. Like a big old list that they could tick stuff off as they go. Honesty is the best policy: id rather see one added tick a month than hear vague assurances that things are being looked at.
5. some indication that players are listened to. I subscribe to "too many cooks spoil the broth" (in retrospect that old english saying has a WHOLE new meaning in modern internets speak! ) mantra. I do still remember the "ask us" thread however. That was a very positive thread. More of this. EDIT: also the current CSM debacle: if you can't do anything for them then im positive you cant do anything for me.
I dont believe anything here is unreasonable or hugely time consuming. . sig says "We Are Recruiting!" |

Huge motivator could have been if CCP actually showed that they cared about their existing players and not just about new ones. Alas they just did the opposite and that begs the question why anyone would want to support a company that doesn't really give a damn about them. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

Ok from the feedback i have seen
Pod a dev would be cool, and it has been done before. CCP TomB taunted everyone in his Eidolon and successfully fought against 50+ people and they couldnt break his tank.
Next - There have been results of the testing, several client fixes have been made and is pretty well optimized. I havent kept up myself but im pretty sure the new round of mass tests is for optimizing the server and communication with the server.
Why not do it on tq? It would break tq honestly test server is exactly as it sounds, testing, for experimental patches and server fixes. To implement these tests on TQ would be a very very bad idea.
--Constructive feed back
Yeah I agree getting on to TQ should be easier, but it works, and helps keep our TQ folders form borking up.
CCP Fallout - This would apply to the entire lag team not just tannis, and the lag team includes the test server team =P

Agree on this.
It's great and all to say "train your character on SiSi just like you do on TQ to try out new skills!" but why would I waste a month training up strategic cruisers on Singularity to test them, find out that I DO like them, and then put the skills on my TQ character where I can waste another month waiting for it to build up? Or alternatively, just simultaneously train the same skills on both servers, and then find out that whatever I skilled up or qualified for is something I don't really like?

You both seam to misunderstand the purpose of the test server. It is not a log on and test your uber leat titan fit server. It is a log on and help test server code and game feature server. They do regularly give test users the needed skills when the need them to test a certain thing IE when PI was on there and when the needed supercaps tested. For the most part you shouldn't need more skill points then you already have on TQ since your only legitimate use of them is testing a bug you have encountered on TQ or working with something the devs need mas tested.
If any of you remember the chaos that was the all level 5 skill event before dominion you have some idea as to how bad of an idea that is.

Funny, I spent time in it... the system where everyone is has several beacons where you warp to and participate in battles to test fits... I dunno, while that might not be what everyone on the server does, there are quite a few people that hang out there, trying out new fits, asking people to fight with them to test something or other, etc.
But I suppose CCP did that to test the, uh, bugs of 1v1 frigate battles. Of course.
EDIT: And I don't WANT a titan, I don't WANT a capital, I just want to know, say, if it's worth it to get T2 weapons, or how ships that I can't handle yet (T2 Cruiser, BSs, stuff like that) are worth it to me (glories praised in forums aside, I want to know how it fits ME, personally)

The moment ccp decides to allocate some resources to fix the game. The latest CSM deal left all that hope to rest as they refuse to listen to the community and actually fix what most likely would be a huge moneymaker for them in many years to come. Instead they use all their manpower on another quakeclone that will bring little new to the gamingworld and be outdated in a short time.

Agreeing with this. If I was on SiSi I would not be flying actual capitals on a 24/7 style. Maybe just to satisfy my curiosity.

Turns out CCP was right, the players don't care about fixing the game only new shinies gratz everyone
TBH I think the install system is perfect for keeping the riffraff out, if you CBA to make a copy of a folder and run a simple installer then you're probably not even worth it as a warm body in a mass test. Any "reward" would be met with the same sense of entitlement that FD currently is, that is already a reward for using Sisi.
The mass test is the final thing you can do to "put your money where your mouth is" re: server lag, short of unsubscribing. With subscription numbers not dropping and few people attending testing events it's "obvious" that lag isn't a problem, at least not a problem that anyone really cares about.

Unfortunately, I haven't got a kilt. I do, however, have some code on Sisi that needs a lot of people to test. Please help me out.

If it takes something like this to get players to test fixes that they have been crying planet sized oceans of tears for, then they should just... I don't know, but it wouldn't be good.

No whining on the forums about people not testing ur code!! oh wait....
Actually if you are still reading this, any hints if the code is for server side optimization or making pi go lag less so we can have bigger fights?
I have been thinking, just saying a mass test is needed may not always get a lot of people. However if you guys state something like, testing a server side fixes to find memory leak in XXXXXX or testing grid load communication errors or something like that, that may encourage more people knowing what we are testing helps out a lot.
But as I have said in numerous threads, good communication between staff and players really helps.

I don't want to state the exact things I'm testing because there's a fair chance they won't work and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I also don't want to draw extra attention to the systems I've changed, because I want to know if the difference is noticeable to players.
So with those in mind, I hope you can understand that I can't really say much more than what I already have.

- ??k free SP on the real server - Another new free ship - ...
I'm sure CCP can find something to reward people to spend some time installing & logging on the test server.
And possibly limit the user amount on sisi, cuz it's prolly going to crash with all the people suddenly participating :p.

New test server topic
I took the suggestion of skill points and put it in the test server forum for their mods and test server staff to see directly. 10 mill is a bit excessive as that is 8 months worth of skills. But maybe with GOOOD feedback we can get that rolling.

That sounds a lot like trial-and-error. Don't tell me you don't expect this to improve the situation.
What about that testing framework that was once part of the Tyrannis feature page? Is it used to conduct automated test in addition to the mass tests with players? How are the results from that?
Could you at least specify which area your change is in: jumping, fleets, weapon, drones, navigation, server or client.
I think this "oh it's a secret and I cannot tell you more so you have to come to find out" is not really attractive any more...

Agreeing with this. If I was on SiSi I would not be flying actual capitals on a 24/7 style. Maybe just to satisfy my curiosity.
Overall I would be spending more time with all the various ships and the various weapon styles.
Exactly, I hear lots of people talk about carriers, moms, titans and such. Can't fly one, don't know what to do with one. Would be nifty to just go futz with one on Sisi to figure it out. But my futzing is also testing, I might end up throwing some whacky combination of modules together and discover a bug. T2 weapons, various module configurations all fit in to the same boat as far as I can see.

Howdy folks,
I wanted to stop in for a brief bit of info.
We've been doing a lot of thinking lately about the best ways to encourage people to participate in mass-testing, as well as effective and fair ways that we might be able to somehow spice things up a bit to make it more enjoyable and more worth everyones time.
That said, we're committed to the mass-testing program for the long-term. This means we won't implement a solution unless we're quite sure that it will A) work to get more people into tests B) not provide an un-fair advantage on TQ and C) make things more fun for testers, without defeating the point of testing.
I'm 100% behind you guys about making it easier to connect to Sisi. We've got some potential solutions in the works, but it'll take time as anything we do will end up affecting the TQ patching process as well. THis means we've gotta go the "do it slow and carefully, so you don't break TQ" route. Our current line of thought here is to use a modified version of the repair tool.
I gotta say, I like the skillpoints idea, at least giving SP on Sisi for those who help with mass-testing. I'll follow-up with that and see how feasible it would be to implement something like that, in the way we'd need it to be on Sisi.
As for the kilt.. I'll go one step further and just make a bet right here and now:
IF: In each of the next 3 mass-tests after the one tomorrow, we have 500+ players show up and participate, I will do one of the following:
(you'll get to vote for which one, if I lose.. I will then post pics on the forums as proof)
- Wear a kilt and war-paint
- Dress up as an exotic dancer for the next CCP staff-meeting
- Work an entire day as a GM, wearing a wig, dress, and high-heels
- Dye my hair pink

That's in best CCP tradition: "We are aware that the current situation is bad. Since it's been bad for so long we feel it's necessary to improve it. So we have begun to search for the perfect solution and we won't waste resources on improving the situation with sub-optimal improvements now. If we find the perfect solution we might start to implement it. That'll be all"

As some people already suggested: How about result?! That's the best way to show it's "worth everyone's time".
It's kinda funny that you spend "a lot of thinking lately" on how to improve people's perception of the mass tests instead of improving the effectiveness of the tests.

Thankfully we had enough people to stress what I needed stressed. It was close; pretty slim showing.
It was an attempted fix for the issue commonly called "module lag." Unfortunately, instead of making the problem better, it made it worse, so back to the drawing board with me. Work continues on it first thing in the morning. Well, maybe after breakfast.
It also wasn't the only thing we tested tonight, but we won't know how the other ones went 'til we dig at some data.
Thanks all that showed, and see you at the next one. I'll have more crazy experiments to carry out~

No doubt that people are more inclined to spend a couple of hours jumping through hoops if you can win a navy Mega.

How about make it easyer to get on test server? I really hate having to download and install it all over again just becouse theres no pacth for it. Come on, you can use same mechanics to distribute test server patches you use on normal server ones.
Thank god i dont have to pay my internet connection based by traffic transferred like in late 80's.
Anyways, i would vote on giving mass test participant that 10 mil sp in test server to play arround with. That way they can get to ship they like, skills they feel are missing, etc.... and really get testing upto speed.
Did i mention make getting to test server easyer yet?

Download and install it over again? You do know that you can just copy your TQ installation over your Sisi folder, then patch it with the TQ -> Sisi patch (which is currently like 12MB or something), right?
12MB is hardly anything to complain about (even if your Internet connection is as bad as mine).
