Good day fellow capsuleers!
I have been working on COSMOS missions for the caldari and noticed a sharp drop in my faction standings with the opposing factions, unfortunately. I did not round robin like the faction standings guide suggested. I came up with a nefarious plan to grind only missions for the 4 corps hosting the 4 empires' epic arcs and eventually unlock and run the epic arcs over and over to raise standings with the 4 empires.
I have been told they raise faction standings without a corresponding opposing faction loss but I just stumbled across a mission report on eve-survival listing gallente and federation ships as the opponents! Darn it! This means that by the time I blow up those ships, my opposing faction standings will tank! Is this right? Is the standings gain "free" or do I, in fact, lose opposing faction standings?

Yes, in case of the caldari epic arc, sometimes you are facing with the gallente. As far as I remember, the amarr epic arc is safe in this regard. I cannot comment on the other 2 factions's epic arc.

The original dev blog on epic arcs claimed that they would have no effect on faction standing. However, the first time I did the Minmatar Epic Arc, my Ammatar standing took a nose dive.
Subsequently, CCP released a patch that "fixed" the faction standing hit. The last time I did the Minmatar Epic Arc, my faction standing remained unaffected.

- Epic Arc missions against other factions WILL NOT give you a faction drop, so if you are doing epic arc mission that involves killing Gallente, you can kill them all without getting lower faction standing with them.
- Epic arc faction bonus (awarded in last mission) will affect ONLY that faction (If you complete the Caldari Epic Arc you won't rise Ammarr standing, but also you won't lose Gallente and Minmatar ones)

Woohoo!
So my plan will work. Excellent! So I will eventually unlock all 4 epic arcs and the sisters and just run them every 3 months over and over and my standings will slowly climb.

You know that you have to have good standing with the corp offering the epic arc to even start the first mission. I think it works out to level 4 Q16 standing with the first agent. So the faction bonus reward is a bit like giving a $100 check to a millionaire.

I recently completed the Minmatar arc. My faction standing was quite low, but i had standings with the 3 corps used in the arc. The faction standing gain i received at the end was hardly worth it tbh.
Confirming no standing loss for faction kills during the arc, thankfully.

yeah, it'll slowly raise, Take quite a while too.

This link shows the starting Agents for all the Epic Arcs. You don't need any standing to run the Sisters Arc which allows you to pick which Faction you want towards the end. That can be used to help balance out lop-sided faction standings.
For the level 4 Epic Arcs, I think it's a bit over +6.80 you'll need in either corporation or faction standing.
Waiting 3 months is a long time and since you have already started COSMOS, maybe this might help while you're waiting.

Its not too hard to raise corporation standings with a single corp. If you are not shooting for faction but single corp standings, just grinding combat missions does it rather quickly. A week to get to lvl4 then it goes pretty quickly thereafter.

I was more or less following that.
sorry guys but rant time:
Let me just say that I HATE cosmos missions. They embody the worst of mmo's. tedious atk farming, npc spawn camping, people griefing the farmers, intense resource competition, killstealing. I hated them soooo much but the rewards were so significant that I forced myself to keep working it. Then, one day, I reached the stupid lowsec missions. CCP actually expects players to FARM in LOWSEC and jump back and forth across a .4 system with farmed objects onboard. Well, I got gatecamped after 2 hours of hard work. I lost my ship, millions in items and the jerk trashtalked too. I said F*** this, threw out my cosmos guide, dumped the remainder of my cosmos crap to the market, left and never looked back. Now, I am farming standing with expert distribution by doing courier missions while I alt-tab play metro2033 and honestly, I am much happier.
All in all, I gained a point and a half of faction standing with caldari for almost 3 weeks work, over 200 million in purchased items, about 20 lost ships, and 3 weeks of mindnumbing tedium. Even better, the caldari gains absolutely WASTED my gallente standings hardcore. BAH!
/rant
Sorry =P ....had to get that off my chest.
