Excuse my ignorance but why is there any market for P0 materials used to produce the following commodities? If anyone purchases them for purposes of refining they are losing isk. Am I missing something? why is there any market for these. They should drop until the item is profitable or until they reach 0. whichever comes first...
Now I understand that oversupply of the refined product due to commonality of planets or npc pre-pi orders can cause sell price to be lower than worthwhile time to extract. in fact refining is likely more common than it should be due to volume reduction anyway putting inverse pressure on these raw materials. But that doesn't explain why sell/buy volume of the raw item is above zero units at current figures...
Alternatively the sell price of the refined commodity could rise to match refining costs :-P

If you have a colony that is producing exactly enough P0 to run every BIP, and have enough grid to build one more BIP/Extractor - which do you build? Some people might build the Extractor to produce a buffer of P0 (which leads to surplus P0) and other people might build the other BIP, thereby needing to import P0 to maintain steady output.
In such a case, there is a supply and a demand - all that's left is to find an agreeable price.

There shouldn't be any P0 being purchased, P1 is better all round.
It's significantly cheaper to import per "Finished Product", it removes the need to have "Basic" Processors on your planet eating up Power, and you can import enough P1 to last over a day/s of processing even at MAX production.
The ONLY VALID reasons for buying P0, is
1) If the P0+Import costs it's cheaper then P1+Import costs, and you have spare power to install Basic Processors. 2) People are buying P1 for more then P0+Import+P1 Export costs. AND you can't make profit with any other PI item.
Every other reason is invalid, costs more, produces less then a P1 alternative per hour, and you have to have more face time with the planet.

Don't forget the market traders and haulers, making profit on P0 is a real possibility.

If you can sell bacteria for 226 per, or micro Organisms at 1.51 per which would you do? if they are equally priced, wouldn't you rather not process and extract more?

The question is not why to sell, but why to buy at that prices.

While most people are motivated by ISK, there are some people that do consider EVE to be a game for relaxation or enjoyment and could care less about ISK, making a profit, or anything most of the rest of us care about.
However those people are going to hell!

Easy! Put up a buy order that is profitable. Import it somewhere process it up, maybe past p1 to a p2, then sell it again. You don't have to buy from the sell orders if it doesn't make sense to you.
