Ok so last night, I find a book at a .4 spot that is cheap and close to my usual carebear base of operations. I buy a shuttle and head on out to go get it. As I jump in I see a gate camp. I warp away with no problem and get my book. Now to get back home, I figure I can warp to zero and just jump out. So I warp to zero and as I'm coming in I get hit with a smartbomb which doesnt kill me outright. So I try to jump and I get a black message (in small type) which flashes across my screen. The message is too fast and too small for me to read, but I figure the gist of it must have been that I was screwed as I couldnt jump. A few seconds later, I'm sitting in my pod and I try to jump/wrap again only to find myself sitting in the same place. Of course a few seconds after that I'm breaking in a shinny new body.
Now apart from the stupid decision making that had me going back to a gate camp, can anyone explain to me the mechanics of why I died? I thought jumpping to zero was fairly foolproof. What did I do wrong? Is there someway to keep a person from jumping? Thxs in advance for the advice/info.

Yes. It's called a Warp Scrambler.

"Session change already in progress" or "You cannot do that while warping". It's due to a small lag.
Second message is something about not allowing you to jump after recently becoming a pod. The server needed some time to synchronize your recent ship change. Warp somewhere else first.
To avoid smartbomb, warp in from unexpected angle, i.e. warp somewhere else other than a station or another gate, then warp to gate.
Hope you injected your book and didn't lose it.

Edited by: Yrielle Vandis on 14/07/2010 14:15:34 Armtoe, the reason you died are those smartbombs. Smartbombs are an AoE (Area of Effect) weapon, and do hit ships that are still in warp. Many a pod/shuttle/frigate has died this way.
As to the message that flashed across your screen, it's entirely possible that you tried to jump through the gate when you were still in warp. Another message that could have flashed across your screen is that someone was attempting to Scramble/Webify you.
Also, WTZ can sometimes (well, seldom to be exact) make your ship drop out of warp just over 2500 meters from your destination, which could lead you to not being able to jump out as well.
But most likely it will be due to a session change, as you had just been shipkilled, the game needed time to update itself, which leads you to not being able to jump out yet. A foe without honour, is a foe already beaten. |

If you know there is a camp you can try the above mentioned methode of undocking, warping to a planet/ moon then from there warp to the gate, which will be at a different angle.
Personally I would sit it out, wait till the guys are gone, jump 3 minutes before DT or log in right after DT.
I too hope you plugged that skill in and not had it rest on your USB stick.

Because shuttles are fast, it is entirely possible to undock and land at a gate before the session change timer has expired.
Warping to a plant or the sun first, then to the gate, probably would have been long enough.

Uh waiting potentially hours and hours until downtime to avoid a gate camp in a shuttle seems a bit extreme.

Thanks for the responses guys. I didn't lose the book, just the shuttle, my clone and a little pride.
How does the session timer work? I've seen it on my screen before and thought it related to the processing of a request to jump or dock. I assumed that you would be safe once you made the jump request, but I guess you're not until the gate fires? |

the session timer is in place (so said by a developer) because EVE is designed to still work with dial up
the timer lets ppl with slower computers and connections catch up
also if u want to verify that it was a session timer u can check the gamelogs (game logs consist of everything that pops up in those little messages in the middle of the screen) in Documents/EVE/logs/Gamelogs
each time u session changes u get a new log so just sort that folder by date modified and u can find it

Every time you swap ships, enter/exit a fleet or change system a new session change timer starts. It lasts 30 seconds.
In the general settings tab of options, you can show any session change timers on your UI.
Fun fact: The gate cloak when you jump systems lasts exactly as long as the session change timer. This means that if you jump into a camp and decide your best option is to burn back to the gate (or you try to warp off but get scrammed and thus NEED to burn back to the gate), you should wait for the session change timer to tick down, lest you get back to the gate and be unable to jump due to the timer./

Smartbombs are capable of doing damage to ships that have not yet exited warp. So he hit you as you were finishing your warp. Two ways around this. First don't travel the same high traffic route that everybody takes. This is where smartbombers are likely to sit along the way. Second is bouncing off a station or planet that is located at different angle to the gate. Smartbombers will sit in a trajectory that directly points to the other gate in system from which traffic is coming. If you have to travel some route a lot, make bookmarks above/below/to the side of the gate at least 150km away, warp to bookmark, then warp down to the gate.
The explosion of your ship must have lagged behind. Any time you get killed and lose your ship, a session change timer gets triggered. Session change timer lasts 30 seconds and gets triggered by events like switching ships, switching ship to pod (in case of getting killed), jumping gates, docking to station, undocking from a station, etc. You cannot start another timer before your old one expires. Thus you cannot dock immediately upon updocking. You cannot jump gate for 30 seconds after losing your ship. You cannot dock for 30 seconds after losing your ship. You can read more in this guide about it.

Edited by: Baka Lakadaka on 15/07/2010 03:13:17 The reason you died is most likely a session timer, or that you tried jumping while still in warp and then sat there, thinking you'd already jumped, when in fact you hadn't. You can look up the gamelogs as suggested to find out for sure. This isn't the real issue though.
The issue is you warped straight into the gaping jaws of a gatecamp, instead of sneaking around the side to safety. When faced with a crocodile between you and your destination, the best way to get there usually isn't jumping into it's mouth.
So, to fix this: Smart bombs can't be set off within range of the gate itself. The smart bomber needs to move off the gate. To do this, they will align themselves with a station, another gate or some other object that they expect people to be coming from. In your case, they expected you to come from the station, so they moved out in that direction. As you came out of warp, just before the gate, you got hit with the full force of the bombs.
The best thing to do is to look at the way the system is set out and where the gate is. Use F11 to bring up the screen and look at the bottom right. That series of concentric circles with little dots on it shows you the basic layout of the system. It's not the best of screens, but after a little practice you can work out what's going on. Look at your position near the station, look at the gate and look for an object off to one side that you can 'bounce' off. Warp to that object and then down to the gate. 9 times out of 10 you'll avoid the smart bombs. Practice using the F11 button in high-sec first (F11 also turns it off).
To go back to the analogy - you've effectively run over to the side of the crocodile, approached from the side and jumped over his tail, occasionally the tail will swipe you, but mostly it won't, because he's still looking for you to come from the direction he expected you.

If you were podded make sure your clone is up to date so next time you lose your pod you dont lose any skill points...
