Ok so I'm new to exploration; it seemed like an interesting change to just rat popping. But I have a couple of problems/questions.
First of all is there any way to pivot around the thing you're actually trying to scan, or is pivoting restricted to just planets, moons and stars? Cause right now scanning within 1AU of a signature that's not right next to a spacial body is a massive pain in the ass - if it's far enough away from a planet etc. it's damn near impossible to manuvuer the probes properly (given that CCP need to use 3D software to create elements of the game I'd of thought they'd have a pretty good grasp of manipulating things in 3D space - just copy max/maya guys).
Second of all I seem to just be finding unstable wormholes; empty pointless bits of space; am I doing something wrong? I expected to have found at least one radar/ladar/mag etc site by now, but I'm just getting standard anomolies and empty wormholes. I've tried everything from 1.0 to 0.5 space.
Don't get me wrong I respect the career and it has attracted me; but for the amount of effort in finding a site there seems to be very little reward (in my case none).
Open to suggestions and information!
Thanks

Iam very disapointed with Magnetometric Sites (Archaelogy ones), they just dont give any valuable loot, ive tried more than 15 and dont got anything that worth the effort to scan then down. >.>

Exploration sites seem to spawn within 4 AU of a planetary body in system. IÆve gotten to where I skip to the next signature on my list if I canÆt get a clear identification of site type at 51% strength or above in Hi Sec when seeking Radar, LADAR, or Magnometric sites. ôUsually,ö such an unidentified signature at 51% or above signal strength is a wormhole or combat location.
As a rookie I have trouble with rotating around a scan point too. I have been able to click, hold, and drag my center of aim near the signature sometimes but fail at doing it consistently. Then, I get distracted by a shiny before I can look it up... O.o
Exploration in Hi Sec can feel like an exercise in frustration sometimes and itÆs competitive. Try to find a string of less populated systems in your area and hope for the best.
PS: Yes, Mag sites need a bump in value. But I still hit them if I find them.

I've done a bit of highsec exploring recently (account is a few months old, so i'm a newbie too) and I agree it can be really frustrating. If you're counting on finding a certain type of site (radar for example), chances are you'll be scanning for a long, long time. My advice is to take your exploring ship to an area of space you've been monitoring for traffic (low traffic) and scan about a dozen systems in the area for a week or so. That will give you an idea of how much competition is in the area (if any) and when they generally clear sites. If you're fortunate enough to find some place clean enough, move a cruiser out to the middle of your rout and set up shop. Clear everything you come across and stockpile at your central location. Make note of any worm holes you come across which are in good condition.
I've probably had the worst possible luck myself. Only 2-3 radar sites (2 of which were being looted when I showed up), lots of grav sites (I don't mine), and more than my share of wormholes that i'm not quite capable of getting into and around safely. That being said, i've still pulled a few decent items from escalated combat sites and salvage, and the one radar site that I got to myself (I can see why these are fought over, that one site along netted me close to 30million from a skillbook and data cores). TLDR: Exploration isn't steady income, but if you're consistantly clearing everything you possibly can in a low-traffic zone, you'll be rewarded. Stick to it if you enjoy it.

This should help you out, if you have not already seen this. I do some exploring, and I think that anomalies will spawn within 8 AU of any celestial object. Don't take my word for it, but there are plenty of guides in the EVE Wiki page you can look at. The exploration in high sec isn't usually all that great. There are a few kinds of combat sites that drop some juicy loot, but I doubt it is where you live (at least the ones I know of). If you grab a friend with a good combat ship, or put the right mods on like a drone boat, you should be able to run some low sec sites without much problem and earn around 30-50 mil a day if your persistent.

Exploration can actually be quite profitable in highsec(though obviously more so in lowsec/0.0/WH). As stated earlier, magnometric sites are currently a waste of time. You'll make your money off of radar sites almost exclusively. People often note that they have bad luck finding radar sites, and this is all luck. One method I use is to take a little 'tour' into regions away from your home station. For example I'll randomly choose a system on the far end of Gallente space, set a course to that, then scan not only every system on the path there, but most of the systems that directly connect to those. This gives you a wide variety of systems to scan as a matter of course, so you're not scanning the same ones over and over which may or may not have lots of competition. Depending on your available play time and travel distance, the 'tour' may take you a couple days to a week.
To answer your specific concern about your pivot point, each probe has some text next to it. In that line of text will be something that describes what your probe is doing in (), like 'idle' or 'scanning', etc. Just click that word and it will make that probe the new pivot point.

You need :
- the 4 astrometric skills to 4 - covops boat - covops skill 4 - probe core launcher or sisters core launcher - watch the probing video on Youtube - practice
there is no radar/ladar/etc .. in all systems but if you scan 2 or 3 systems, you have to find some. Maybe you re not very experienced with scanning, but there is definitely stuff to find around. Other alernative is to jump into a WH and can inside, you will definitely find sites, carefull with people inside -))

That is a good tip right there.
As an Explorer, I will tell you that there is not too much isk to be made in HiSec. Sometimes you can get a nice Radar site with i believe invention items that sell for 5, 6 or 7mil.
I tend to scan em out, and run those (and Mag sites) on my alt. If I find a grav I will mine it.... If I find a WH I will look inside and sometimes play in the empty ones.... I have NEVER found a Ladar site in HiSec.
Oh, If you are searching in busy systems there is a good chance someone else has found them and run them first. When a site despawns it does not spawn another site in the same system (they spawn in the same region? or group of systems). SO busy systems are more likely to be empty.

Edited by: Captain Raleigh on 15/07/2010 18:09:30 Cheers for the tips guys - especially the one about pivoting around your probes via the text!
So am I to understand that it's worth scanning 'within' wormholes? Even though they were all 'unstable' and therefore non-interesting I didn't think to try scanning within them.
I'll head in to low-sec and see if I can find anything interesting. I can afford to lose the Vexor and its kit so I'm not too worried about being ganked.
Cheers
[edit, this is AllSavage, for some reason the forum defaults to a char I played for about an hour :p]

LADAR is gas, right? I've found afew but not worth doing, considering retriever can't fit the gas miner, only Indy ship (1 hislot). My profit would have been 500k/hour, worthless. Mycotoxin,-something. Found at least 5-6 of these sites but never bothered after 1st one. I'm a sporadic explorer.

for make money its hard:
in high sec: -target complex 3/10(few) and 4/10 (often) ar emost valuable . your target is the overseer drop. and escalation. -clean radar and pickup decryptor. -ignore magneto/gravi/ladar/anomaly. I use an ishtar, you need to scan 20+ system before find a 4/10.
sometimes i do also magneto (but not valuable drop) and complex 1/10 in Ishkur when i found 3 or 4 of them...rarely a overseer, but some escaltion can bring some cool small a-type modules.
to be honest all your money depend of nomber of decryptor, and of overseer loot of 4/10... if you find a module or ship bpc at 150m you win your day. and in high sec its really hard to find a 4/10 in some regions.
The low sec request more skill for explo and perhaps 2 people. in some complex 5-6-7/10 you have 40m of bounty, its hard like a Lvl5 and long..so pirates have the time to find you. use ishtar or a good command ship.. you'll find cool module also.
0.0 need empty system or standing, it can be valuable, but you need 3people, and the most difficult is to do escaltion at XXX jumps.... but some module are at 1b+. :) there's few farmer in LS, so no problem for find complex the danger are pirates,

Rated DED plexes do not escalate.
Quote: -ignore magneto/gravi/ladar/anomaly.
Anomalies can be done whilst scanning down signatures and have small chance of faction spawn and escalation to DED plex. Worth doing.

No you don't

Edited by: DeMichael Crimson on 16/07/2010 00:20:50 Guess nobody bothered to read the other posted threads I linked up above.
A little bit of looking back in this forum section at past threads posted would answer a lot of questions. Not to mention that there is some valuable information locked away just a few pages back.
Actually, I'm kinda glad everyone thinks high security is lousy for exploration, leaves a lot more loot for me to collect. I doubt I'll be sharing any more hard earned exploration secrets.
Yeah, I'm a bit right now and quite frankly, I hope everyone continues to bypass exploration in high security.

Btw. it was you whom I met yesterday in a system (forgot the name, but was maybe 5 jumps away from Jita) at the sun?

Be sure to bookmark the entrance and exit of a wormhole if you go in there ;) saves you the time of needing to scan it again :P
I have never had a signature before, is it any good? |

I have found 2 ladar sites in highsec in recent months. They are pretty rare though, and the gas you can mine from them is nearly worthless.
