I wonder if there are any mobilephone phantoms around here? I have been for a while looking for a new mobile phone and have fallen in love with the HTC desire smartphone. It is also a phone that have got plenty of good reviews around and supposed to be a mighty phone. And so I have placed an order for one.
However, the phone dont have a HD video recording, only WVGA video recording. However, some rumours out there told me this would be be possible to upgrade later on with a software upgrade. Like upgrading from Android 2.1 to 2.2 or something. Do anyone know if this can be/will be true? I partly placed my order based on this rumour..
I can however still change the phone I placed an order for until friday since they did not have HTC Desire on stock, so if anyone think this is a bad choice I certainly will listen. I dont want to buy an Iphone though, so you can forget about that! But a phone with HD video would be nice, as long it carries the quality of the HTC Desire in addition.
So, any tips? THX!

Edited by: Emissio Lacrimare on 15/07/2010 01:02:42 Buy it m8. I highly recommend it. And yes it will get the 2.1 to 2.2 upgrade. HTC said that all android phones that came out after january gets the uppgrade. And besides you could always "root" it and install an unoffical upgrade :P
OR Get the Samsung Galaxy S. That's the phone im buying next :)

Flatmate and other friend have got it, both love it. Only real downside is the battery, but that is an issue with every smartphone unfortunately.
720p video recording on phones still looks pretty rubbish tbh, you cant do anything serious with it so I really wouldnt worry about that too much. I haven't heard about the Desire getting an update to give it 720p recording, the HTC Incredible sold in USA did get such an update thou, so its not entirely impossible.
Free phone, ú30/month, unlimited texts and internet and 600mins on Tmobile. It is 24month contract, but they are really pushing people to take the 24month contracts not 18 now.

I'd go with a Galaxy S from 3. They have the android 2.1 OS compared with the other suppliers I believe. I have the one from T-Mobile, that had 1.5 but had to root it as T-Mobile take too long releasing the updates.
Android is a good OS thou, and the newer OS has flash so thats one more than the IPhone.

Almost everybody I know with a smartphone have either HTC Hero, HTC Legend or HTC Desire. We all love our phones. :)
Some stick to the iPhone. Its a decent phone, but in my opinion, its worse than the HTC phones.
Perhaps iPhone 4 has a chance, but its doomed to become outdated quickly, specially with the speed Google is releasing new versions of Android all the time.
I have Linux both on my desktop and in my phone now and loving it.

You realise it isn't T-mobile that is slow on the updates it is the phone manufacturer. The trouble is the phone makers putting their crappy skins over the top of Android, then taking 6months to bring their crappy skins up to date with the latest Android, or in the case of some phones like the old Samsung, they just didnt bother. HTC isn't much better, thankfully because my G1 is just using vanilla Android, Tmobile pushed out the updates fairly soon after they got them from Google (Till I rooted it anyway).
Galaxy S come with Android 2.1 regardless of network, and I can't recommend going with 3.
Best deal I can find on the Galaxy S atm is on T-mobile.
ú15/month 24months Unlimited texts Unlimited Internet 300mins ú265 for the phone. Total cost : ú625
If you want the phone for free you will have to get a ú35/month 24month contract = ú840
For the HTC Desire either T-mobile or Vodafone have the phone for free on ú30/m 24month (ú720 TCO). O2 you pay ú35 for the same contract and ú50 for the phone and Orange isn't in stock.
I have only looked at the 4 major phone company's websites so better deals may be found at other online shops or places like phones4u etc.

I have a samsung smartphone and have recently found that no one apart from o2 with there iphones do "unlimited internet", the fair use each network has now gives hardly enough bandwidth use to do anything, the best one being t-mobile with a cap of 3gigs, everyone else seems to be between 500mb - 1gig

There is no such thing as "unlimited" internet, that is correct, it is a marketing term. The point is that 98% of people are never even going to come close to using their monthly limit that it is seemingly "unlimited". Not sure what you are talking about o2, their contracts including iphone ones have limits on their internet.

If you loves to have a good camera and a screen that works outside in sun, then DO NOT go for the HTC Desire. The camera sucks and the AMOLED screens sucks donkey kong outside in sun. You simply can't see a damn thing on the screen outside in sun.
Simple as that.
But other than that, it's a great phone. And ofc, it's good that your intrested in the open world with Android instead of going for iPhone 4 that have half of the features the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10i (like i have) and the HTC Desire have and still cost 70-80% more.

Hmm... just checked out your phone on the net and I actually quite liked it... Strangly enough my phone company dont have the X10i for sale, just the X10 mini... I might give the phonecompany a call on monday though since they have some problems delivering the phone I ordered. It seems to be quite a bestseller, and now they are awaiting for a new stock, which will take a week. So maybe I can go for the phone you got. It seems actually quite good!
And yes, I am not going for iphone and MS phones. Iphone with its very closed and restricted phones are not to my taste, and microsoft i have got enough of on my PC... Android seems to be perfect since its open OS. Although I have to admit I was a little sceptical seeing Google was on the ownership.
I will make my decision on phone on monday. It might be the phone you got. So thanks for your advice!

If possible go and have a play with a real SE X10 in a shop, I didn't like the software at all. Timescape and Mediascape seemed laggy and not very useful to me, others seem to really like them however.

The XPERIA X10 have got a new software update now that have improved the speed and smoothness of the phone dramaticly.
And you can also root the XPERIA X10 now to if you like. I have and it's letting me do some cool things.
So if your gonna go for the XPERIA X10, let me know so i can help you if you need any helps.
Well just to let you know. The screen the Desire have is better than the screen the XPERIA X10 have for inside usage. And the Desire are running Android 2.1 officially by HTC and Android 2.2 unofficcially. So that's the only thing that is better by the HTC Desire now.
So the OS is much better on the HTC Desire.
But, we are getting Android 2.1 on the XPERIA X10 in Q3 this year, so that's just like within 2 months and 10 days.
So if you can wait on the Android 2.1 on the XPERIA X10, you will actually get a phone that will laught at the HTC Desire when it gets Android 2.1.
Oh, here is some pictures i have taken with my XPERIA X10 with full resolution (8.1 mpix) to let you see how good the camera really is .
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7309753/DSC_0019.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7309753/DSC_0027.jpg
And here is 2 pictures taken in 2 mpix resolution.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7309753/DSC_0057.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7309753/DSC_0060.jpg
Now that's what i call for quality. Now you might find that the pictures isn't really that clear, but that's because the noises in the pictures are minimal. If you had made the pictures any clearer than it is now, the pictures would looks bad with lots of noises in.
I'll guess you have seen how bad the pictures from the iPhone 4 can be because of alot of noises in the pictures?

Do NOT get the GALAXY. The Samsung Galaxy and Samsung Galaxy Portal will NOT connect to a PC, full stop. Samsung know of this issue and have been trying to rework Samsung KIES (their software package to connect phone to pc) for the last few months. They hoped that the latest KIES release (for the Wave) would work but in the majority of cases it doesnt. In those few cases where success has been reported its only as 'mass storage' not the phone itself. Also, when using KIES, if you have any redundent phone (other than Samsung) drivers on your pc, like iphone or LG etc, KIEs wont even install native Samsung drivers on your pc. Its a conflict that Samsung warn about. Basically, the only way its going to happen is for Samsung to recall all of the phones and replace them with new ones that have the correct software installed that allows connectivity. That wont happen of course. If you know a way to make the Galaxy or Galaxy Portal connect to the pc, let Samsung know as they have several thousand disgruntled customers who are desperate for a fix (me being one of them).
Yes, this is an alt cos my main is forum banned :) |
