Right, i get the reasons for having one and I have watched the vids, ive even managed to make some of the stuff with PI for running one, but......
ive been around to scout out a few planets and the ones ive been to all have POS already there. Can i pop one up next to it or is it one POS per moon? or a set minimum distance between POS?

For everyone, and the only way to free up a moon is to blow the POS up.

Only one POS can be anchored at a moon so if one is already there tough luck

A moon can only have one POS, period. Doesn't matter who put it there. Once a moon has a POS, it can't have another until the existing one is completely taken down. In fact, when you anchor a tower, no matter where around the moon you physically try to anchor it, the tower will snap to one predetermined spot on the grid. You don't really have a choice where at the moon the POS goes.
I am assuming you are high sec. If so, you're going to have a hard time finding a moon in a 0.5 system which isn't already taken. Most 0.6 and 0.7 systems will have free moons. You can not put a POS in a 0.8 or higher system.
Good luck.

Try moving more than a couple of jumps away from Jita (replace with other system name which is either a trade hub or a mission hub or otherwise densely populated) and you will find enough free moons. Also, usually, higher system sec -> less towers (since standings prerequisites are higher, so less people bother).

And if that's the character and corp you are trying to anchor a POS for, you better do some more reading on required standings. Even in 7 days, when your CEO's standings kick in, you'll need to kick yourself (and the possibly the third character) from the corp temporarily, and even then you only have standing to anchor in MinRep or Gallente 0.5 or lower.

You can find plenty of moon in high sec. You definitely want a station in system to safely store your bpos. Caldari and Amarr I would assume are most populated because they are the faction most people mission for but personally having put up 2 poses in Caldari space just recently I have no problem finding spare moons (although one of the moons I orginally planned to anchor at was taken when I brought over the tower a few days after scouting).

Can a system be probed to determine what moons are available without having to warp to each one? If so, whats the best method and which probe would provide the best/fastest results?
Thanks

If you really wanted to waste the time and effort, I suppose you could try probing for the structures using Combats. But you'd have to be very precise, to account for deviation. And even then, if a single planet has 20 moons, you will probably have to search manually at that point.
Only if a planet had a single unoccupied moon, would you be able to tell just by probing and noting the lack of structures. |

Can also use directional scanner set 360 degrees max range set to use overview settings and set overview for moons and control towers only scan count moons count control towers start looking if less control towers then moons or if looking for a moon in caldari space will sell you the location of a couple empty moons for 50 mill
