Hey guys, fairly simple question here. What is the best Internet security program on market? (anti-virus, firewall, other stuff all in one)
I'm pretty much completely in the dark about these things and have no idea which ones are good or bad, let alone which is the best. I don't even know about all that many; Norton, McAffee, and the one I use, Trend Micro. So if anyone could list a few more and recommend which is the 'best', I'd appreciate it. ~ CURRENT INTERNETS = + 745184 |

i use microsoft security essentials for antivirus as is stays mostly out of the way, and windows firewall which is perfectly configurable and works great.

I would avoid Norton desktop security\av products. Memory hogs and not that good.

I'm quite fond of Avast! at the moment. Free, and technically very solid. Has yet to let me down.
As far as a firewall goes, you don't really need one so long as your router/modem has an integrated one to keep people out. If you want to keep things in, ZoneAlarm is meant to be good, but the paid Avast! does it too iirc, I've just never needed that (Or rather done it on my proper hardware firewall). -- Ix Forres - 3rd Party Application Developer -EVE Metrics

I use Avast! free antivirus and it seems pretty decent. The whole 'Internet Security' thing is mostly just marketing fear so people spend money on redundant security products.
You only need a software firewall if: - You're not using a Router/are not in a network - You've enabled DMZ/Forwarded ports on your Router - Your PC is already compromised (trojan/backdoor)
Just being behind a router means that all attacks from the outside will only see the router, all PCs behind it will be invisible unless you've set up port forwarding/DMZ from your router to your PC.
I mean, a little extra security can't hurt. It's just not worth paying money for when you can get it for free (Zonealarm)

Any views on AVG free edition?
I wouldn't bother with either Mfafee or norton. Tried them both when bundled with a new PC and they were too intrusive and constantly demanding I pay money to subscribe. Installed AVG free edition when the free trials of mcafee and norton expired.
AVG has only found one virus in a torrent and constantly deletes cookies from msn whenever I close it. Don't know if this is cos I stay safe online or AVG is siht.

This. Although unless you go to very shady sites and/or you don't pay attention, you shouldn't really need a virus scanner at all. Firewall is also unnecessary if you are behind a router of some kind.

Internet security? Who needs bloated software like that. Firefox + Ad-Aware pro is all I'm using and I haven't had any problems for years since I started using that combo.
Lavasoft do have Ad-Aware Total Security, but Ad-Aware pro and common Internet sense is enough for me. ---

What gets me is I have lavasofts ad aware and it has never once blocked a threat, yet face book and msn constantly blast me with ads related to my surfing habits. ... cmon guys my surfing habits are noble and your mindset is so 2001! |

Question is, are you using the free version or pro? Because the free version does not have Ad-Watch Live!, which does protect against threats. Also, tracking cookies are not a 'threat' in the dangerous sense, so Ad-Aware only removes them when doing a scan. ---

+1 for common sense. I use Linux on my non-gaming PC and although you are less prone to getting malware, you aren't invulnerable. That being said; on my gaming rig I use Comodo and aside from the fact that the prompts can be annoying, it does a decent job.
But all in all, the best anti-virus/crap program is common sense. Avoid shady websites and always make sure you know what you are clicking on before you do.
