The only real problem I see with PI that it is utterly unrealistic (even by SCI-FI standards) -- a next previously undiscovered mineral deposit materializing right after the first one was depleted? Factories and facilities do not cost anything to maintain? Colonists working for free? I mean come on.
It's not that I worry about clicking (I am a lazy git and I use 96 hour cycle) -- I just don't like silly restrictions.
While I understand that CCP does not want to make it completely interaction free (for obvious reasons) I am sure there are other ways to do that.
IMHO the deposit should spawn only once. The quality and size should be random (the larger and higher quality is harder to find) You should be able to use multiple extractors to mine it. Once it is extracted, it should go away "forever" (a month or so) and you should have to actually move the extractor(s) to new location.
Of course, the deposit would have to last lot longer than one day. Oh and prospecting should take more time than few seconds.

There are two ways to look at "how PI should have been"... and I expect that a LARGE majority of the clicky-complaints have more to do with mismatched expectations than the reality.
One can really think of PI as being an "add-on" to EVE. If one has that view, then your suggestion is perfect because it makes it where you pay extremely little attention to the thing and it is (mostly) passive income much the way Data Cores are...
But another view is that PI is an alternate way to play eve, much like the difference between being a High Sec mission runner and being a low-sec pirate. Even if there is some overlap, it is 2 different play styles. Now, don't get me wrong... I can't imagine anyone "playing Planets" for more than a few weeks before it becomes "babysitting extractors" and finally "logistics" - but, it's possible that future expansions of PI could lead it to be more of a "mini-game".
If PI does become more of a mini-game, then having daily/hourly extractor resets makes some sense. If PI remains in the "logistics" category - then I have to agree with you, the current system is pretty silly. ---

Well if you think about it, these extractors can be say, the size of a small building but their "range" could be as large as 100-1000 KM depending on planet diameter. You could make the argument that they are moving around and that is why they need to be manually set to rescan. I do agree if that is what they are going for, the results should be slightly, randomly different each time. I also think in the EVE Universe, they would have the technology to automate the click-fest even though I can currently tolerate it.

I would like to group extractors that way i could set the whole group's deposit and run time in fewer clicks.
