Random music question time :)
So I'm making a music T-shirt to troll those indie music snobs who think the only good music is music no one's ever heard of. The text will be something like:
Voices Of Their Decade 60s - the Beatles 70s - the Stones 80s - ??? 90s - Nirvana 00s - Nickelback
The question is: what band would you put in for the 80s? Who best represents the dominant musical trend of that decade?

I'd say Led Zeppelin was the voice of the 70s, whereas The Beatles and The Stones may be tied for the 60's.
The 80's belonged completely to Michael Jackson.

Whether we like it or not, the single highest-selling album in history was Michael Jackson's Thriller, which came out around '84. I'd say he was definitely the voice of the 80's.
Now if we're talking rock and metal, then of course glam would be it, but we're talking about a single voice of the entire 80's.

My own preference is:-
70's Led Zeppelin 80's - Well is it daft to ask what was the most dominant singular musical trend as there were so many good different ones that emerged in that decade.

The Stones would belong to the '60s. They were the Beatles "rivals" all through the decade, and made their best records towards the end of it. They reached their zenith on the very early '70s, with "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street"... but after Exile, in 1972, it all started to go downhill.
(btw, anyone who wants to watch the sort of debauchery that was going on during their Exile tour, search for "C*cksucker Blues" on YouTube )
Led Zeppelin makes a much better candidate for the '70s, particularly given the huge influence they would have on rock and metal... or even Pink Floyd.
In the '80s everything became much more fragmented, with new music genres emerging left and right, and it's hard to pick a single voice that properly captures and represents the zeitgeist... MJ was immensely popular, and so was Madonna, U2 and Prince... but regardless of how many units they shifted, do you think of them when you think of "80s-ness"? Personally I don't, but then I wasn't into their music, so I'm biased.
Metal came of age in the 80s and became very popular, but it has transcended that decade as a genre, with the exception of Glam / Hair Metal, hugely popular during that decade, but proving unable to survive once the 90s kicked in and Grunge took the reins.
If I had to pick one popular band that captures more 80s-ness than anyone else, that would be The Cure. They capture the glamness of the Hair Metal bands, and put it together with the whole new wave / goth / post-punk sounds, aesthetics and attitudes that were pretty characteristic to that decade.
(I'm aware this thread was meant to be light-hearted, but I'm a huge music nerd, so suck it )

Ah, so thats why the 90s sucked.
As for 80's and "pop" music, I'd vote Queen. MJ might have been huge, but Queen was very big, and contrary to MJ, good.
Also, 70's are Led Zep/Floyd for more popular stuff, while Black Sabbath for all metalheads. Hell, the first 5 Sabbath albvums each spawned multiple genres of their own, faaaar overshadowing LedZeps influence.
For non-pop, The Cure nails it, even if the period between ****ography and Disintegration sucked.

Nickelback, think about it... I want my nickel back, they know it, there should be a questionmark behind that name.
80s Cindy Lauper, Kraftwerk, Alphaville, Twisted Sister, lots to choose from but if you're going to put garbage like Nickelback on there don't taint these artists!

Shame on you for the 50's not being mentioned, Elvis obviously but lots of brilliant artists as well as Elvis coming through, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few all influenced by music born of and from the South.
60's Beatles and the Stones I guess, The Who should also get a mention as well but they also did great stuff in the 70's.
70's Has to be Led Zep, but Queens early work can't be ignored either.
80's If you don't let personal taste cloud your judgement (ahem Nickelback) then you can't look past Michael Jackson or Madonna, also the 80's saw the release of NWA's Straight outta Compton which a lot of believe is the seminal Rap album, but Rap is a love hate music there's no middle ground so people would dispute it but it's influence is not in doubt.
90's is a tough call as well Nirvana would be up there but I'd say Pearl Jam got the more main stream audience turned onto "Grunge", also people might stick Sound Garden, formed and did work in the 80's, but got big in the 90's I dunno, it's harder to pick an individual or band out as time has gone on. I think that will become easier as acts start to stand the test of time.
Nickelback.............
WTF.
That aside it's a hard list to compile as you come forward in time.

50's = Elvis 60's = Beatles 70's = Sex Pistols 80's = No-one really - whoever invented ****-pop :) 90's = Stone Roses 00's = See 80's ;) . All generalisations are false - Discuss.

You guys know this is a TROLL list right? I mean it's pretty obvious (aside from OP saying so). At best overrated, and generally pretty terrible mentions.
