Titans are by far the largest ships in the game and can only be produced in 0.0 space as the building array requires sov.
They are rare (well sort of) because they cost 35/40 billion isk in minerals 70+ billion in BPOs and a few billion in POS equipment and system upgrades.
Trade is technically not possible through normal game mechanics and has to be done by basically trusting someone to give you the money after you eject from the ship, there are services Chribba & Darkness offer that basically acts as a go between that receives the isk before the titan is put at risk.
Hope that helps

Edited by: Rainus Max on 18/07/2010 12:52:29 Well rare enough for the guys that are outside 0.0
But yeah 0.0 its "fairly common" to see them. The great liberation of JC-YX8 for example saw 36 titans in system iirc one of the largest (if not the largest) titan deployments in eve history.
I look forward to the day an anti-titan super super cap pops into game MUHAHAHAHAHA

A titan (like a mothership) can only be made at a super duper deluxe capital ship assembly array at a POS from a corp(/alliance) that has a certain sovereignty level (I believe sov 4) in that system so only in 0.0 (not low-sec as you assume).
The reason why they are mostly traded/sold via low-sec systems is that you can't 'own' those systems and thus it is the most 'neutral' ground that a trade can take place in.
Usually for supercapital trades (unless both parties trust eachother enough) a neutral 3rd party service is employed. This basically means that some 3rd party not aligned to either selling party or buying party acts as a mediator collecting both the payment and the titan from both parties and then after having received both hands them over to said parties (money to seller and titan/mothership to buyer). This is usually done at a POS owned by the 3rd party service provider providing both parties access to the POS while the trade takes place. Some well known (and trusted by everyone in eve) 3rd party service providers are Chribba and Darkness. If you are looking for a 3rd party provider check out the WTS forum section and they shouldn't be hard to find. Usually a 3rd party service provider has his/her own thread with a list of references and past clients as proof of their trustworthiness. A titan is usually traded with either a T2 travel fit (and fuel) and/or combat fitted (with officer/deadspace mods) at prices ranging from around 60bil to 100bil+, Motherships go for around 6bil to 15bil.
I hope this provides you with all the information you were looking for. __________________________________________________
