That's correct. An Astronomical Unit (AU) is defined as the mean distance from the Earth to the Sun. It's a useful unit for distances within a solar system where kilometers would be too small and light years would be far too big.

AUs are quite silly. 1 AU is almost 8.5 light minutes. 1 AU is about 503 light seconds (if memory serves). Dealing with the speed of light makes more sense.

A light year is also equal to 63,241 astronomical units (AU) (give or take a bit) So that means that 1 AU is 0.0000158 light years. 200AU's would be 0.00316 light years. Tell me how far 0.000465 light years is.
It's alot harder to read and know how far a number that would be expressed as a being to the negative power in most science or math subjetcs in comparision to flat out 'bigger' numbers.

AU's can not be independently recreated. 1 AU is the mean distance between Earth and Sol. If you are peddling around any other star system, you don't have that specific celestrial pair for reference. AUs only make sense in the Sol system, and should be renamed to reflect that. The speed of light is, as far as we know, constant throughout space. The distance of one light second, one light minute, one light hour, et cetera, is the same regardless of which star you are measuring the light from.
It doesn't make much sense to use something as arbitrary as the Earth AU, and then use the metric system elsewhere. While, admittedly, the meter was orginally crafted from the circumfrence of the Earth, it has since been redefined to be a convoluted, but independent measure. Currently a meter is "the length of the path traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second." This is reversed from c (the speed of light) being measured as 299,792,458 m/s. There is also a way of measuring a meter by using a cesium clock and an iodine stabilized helium-neon LASER. While this still isn't perfect, it is the best you can do without redefining the length of a meter. The meter is still better than the yard, since we don't commonly use deci- or centi-yards and no one remembers that there are 5 1/2 yards in a rod, that there are 40 rod in a furlong, and that there are 8 furlong in a mile.
Mind you, the length of a second is arbitrary, too, but that is a discussion for another time.

The use of AU's in the EvE galaxy is silly because its been what? thousands of years the eve galaxy got colonized from our galaxy... Most eve inhabitants probably dont even know what sol means, let alone some planet called earth...
Names are changed, especially after a few thousands years

But On that subject One Metre is the lengthfrom two notch's on a piece of platnium in a Observeitory in France.Thats was simply divided by 100 for Centimetres and Multiplied by 1000 to get kilometres. No doubt the Second(Which the speed of light is measured in,m/second after all) comes from another arbitary and dead civilaisation,Perhaps the length of time for a certain type of sand to move through a certain type of Hour Glass.It make perfect sense for the AU to still be in use,If it aint broke dont fix it.

As you said, the 'second' is not an independent measure itself, being based upon the rotation time of the Earth. As you used this for the basis of your definition of a meter, that means that a meter is also not an independent measure.
