I've been trying out EVE for the equivalence of 3 months and I'm still not grasping the fun concept of this game. Now I realize not every game is fun for all, but many of my friends claim this as the holy grail of MMORPGs. I would really like someone to point out what I can do for a corp - I have doubts about playing because you have no direct control on how to progress your character (other than waiting a month to get into the next ship).
I log a minimum of 9 hours to a game when I play. I can't ever see myself mining - the laser effects look too corny for me to get into it. I enjoy team pvp, but for a new player getting the skills that 4-year players have is impossible? And the missions are too repetitive to keep my attention.

I would recommend joining a good corp. Eve as a game actually sucks But the corp drama is what keeps it going.
It's about the only MMO worth telling war stories about. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Newbies are great in PvP: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1025677&page=1#1 watch that video. I found it rather inspiring.

Wow, an actual EVE player that will admit that - well done, sir. I don't see myself paying XYZ USD for something I can't find fun in. The dogfights look somewhat boring too; I always assumed that the user is inputting more controls than the UI screencap indicates.
Another qualm: Why does my ship always clip straight through an object when I warp somewhere. My limited knowledge of physics tells me something is amiss.

I'm beginning to get tired of newbies recently just posting this 'I don't get it' whine. Not every game is for everyone. I live in the UK where I'm massively in the minority in finding soccer incredibly dull. Do I frequent the terraces lecturing the fans on why the game's s**t? No. I just avoid it.
There is a more considered argument and persuasion to play but you will find it on any of the many, many other posts like this on the other pages of this forum. Just search a little.
We aren't here to persuade you to play. We aren't paid by anyone to come running to your imperious demands. We're here to answer serious questions because we have sympathies with those who are overwhelmed when they walk in. If you just want to whine, the door is thataway.
If you are lost, if you don't get it, consider for a moment that it might just be you that is deficient. Just, you know, as an intellectual exercise.

Don't be surprised at that, we KNOW what EVE is and what it isn't. We know that it's not a fast paced shooter with WASD or joystick control.
EVE is: - a thriving economy, almost entirely governed by 300k+ subscribers - a science fiction "simulator" that allows role-players and science fiction fans to "live" in a virtual world of 30 - 50k characters simultaneously online - an RPG style combat system where losses actually matter, therefore making wins even more rewarding - a game where moral decisions are not restricted to quest outcomes. In EVE you can scam players and build as bad a reputation as you want. - a game were cooperation between players can take effect on many more layers then in most other games - a drug. If it's not your drug of choice, then leave - a game where planning and patience are rewarded

My limited knowledge of physics tells me an object with positive mass can not go faster than the speed of light. It is entirely plausible that the [insert high-grade handwavium] allowing warp speeds also allows warping ships to pass through solid objects. This does not entirely explain what happens when you make a bookmark inside a planet and warp to it though...
If I remember correctly, there have been changes in the positions of solar objects at one point of time (Apocrypha? Or one of the minor patches?) so that you would not warp through planets on more common trips - e.g. between two gates. But there is still a whole lot of places where this happens.

What I like about EVE is that it puts across just how insignificant we are. Even if we are the most super uber player in the game (whatever that might be) our direct impact on the rest of the playerbase is minimal. That, and the fact that there is no real "I WIN" point in EVE makes it appear totally open ended. People are therefore more likely to continue playing as they do not feel compelled to play catch up to an unattainable ideal. You can play the game at your own pace and still develop. Burnout won't occur quite so readily and the game continues to grow and develop. -----

This is what I've always enjoyed.
There's no level cap. There's no high-end dungeon. There's no real endgame.
Sure, you could argue that PvP or corporate warfare are the endgame... But you can get into that on day 1 if you wan to.
You could claim that a titan is the most badass ship out there... But they're of very limited utility, and lots of people really don't care about flying them at all.
There's no arbitrary, external goal to aim for. What you do with yourself, and how far you go, is entirely up to you.

This is what I love about EVE. I have been playing it less recently, but that's because I've only just started playing and the game is so vast, I'm not really sure what to do or where to go until my skills improve - plus I guess I'm still weaning myself off WoW's hand-holding nature (aim: get more purpz, beat more bosses, stand in dalaran showing off rare mount)
But while EVE can be boring or overwhelming at times for me, it's main draw is that I am always advancing whether I'm playing or not - it removes a lot of the elitism I experienced in WoW because it doesn't matter so much if you play 1 or 11 hours a day, and given time and some strategic decisions you can be one of the 'big boys', and keep getting bigger... rather than just hit a ceiling, then spend your playtime boasting about how you have no more to do.

Blah, blah, again
Was¦nt your own thread locked because of "telling newcomers to leave is not productive?"
So why do you repeat this s*** again? If you are pi**ed off newbies questions why do you read this intersection?

I'm really new to the game but from my point EVE it's as close as you can get to a RL environment in a game. Everything (or at least the majority) of things are based on players. You don't have to grind anything, you just simply progress. And corporations is what really makes it complete. There's always something to do what ever that is. Without a end goal this pretty much is a virtual life :)
The way I see it. If sci-fi is your area of interest then Eve it's simply the only and best way to enjoy and experience it.
