I was thinking that adding two commands to the ship's controls where you can land a ship on a structure such as an asteroid or on top of a space station and also where you could actually cut off your engines (or even just place them on standby) would add an extra dynamic to the game that is not being acheived now.
Think star wars when Han stuck his ship to the back of that Imperial Star Destroyer. Or when Obi-Wan landed on the side of that asteroid to hide from The Fett. I play a Miner and a Pirate in Eve. Something like this could add an extra level of nuance to Eve, making it more realistic and interesting. Think about it. A band of pirates could set up an ambush in an asteroid field and shut down their engines so their signatures would be less detectable. Then when a Target presented itself they would crank up and zip toward their prey before the pilot could figure out what to do. Conversly that same pilot could park his ship inside a hollow asteroid and cut his engines off thus reducing his signature. Then he could cloak eliminating said signature ALMOST Completely and noone would know he was there. If the pilot had enough skill the pirates would think he escaped and leave giving enough time to crank up and haul off to a station. Now mind you I am in NO WAY saying that said process of cranking up, decloaking, and lifting off should be instantaneous. That would be ridiculous. The time it would take to perform these actions would be dictated by the skills your character has and the level at which those skills are trained; just like everything else in EVE having to do with Ship Piloting. Thus all sides of the board would get a fair and equal share in the matter. Thus balance is still acheived. Oh so many times have I wished I could do this. Maybe I would not have been blasted those last 2 times.

I whish someone would sue IBM for putting caps lock on the keyboard. The world would be a better place without it.

I don't suppose you bothered to read the other 239329110475 ideas and topics on this same subject before you just had to type your brilliant never before considered post.
Now... consider all the game breaking manners in which I, the evil bastard, will abuse this horrifically dumb idea.
Now... stop posting!

I read 'ENGINE TRAILS'. Then read the OP and found nothing about 'ENGINE TRAILS', so reread the title and realised it didn't say 'ENGINE TRAILS'; just 'ENGINE'.
Leaving this thread now, sorely disappointed. o/

Edited by: SGT FUNYOUN on 09/08/2010 18:12:41 The main point of this thread and the whole thing with the Han Solo reference was not the cutting off the engines bit... The WHOLE POINT of THIS thread was the LANDING on a structure part. The whole engine cut off idea is secondary.
And I happened to be watching Star Wars at the time I posted this and it was the reason I put the reference in here. I do not have much else to do here on a base the size of a football field in the middle of nowhere in Iraq so if I like watching Star Wars to pass the time and you do not like that then maybe you should come here and tell me to my face. Anyone who dislikes this idea solely because of a Pop culture reference is simply an ignorant fool and I have no time for you. Come back when you actually gain some intelligence in the world.
Everybody has a smartaliek comment but nothing constructive because you failed to actually read the thing. Try actually absorbing the information before you go off all half-****ed and make a complete fool of yourselves again.
If you got a better idea then post it.

*dons troll-hat* Since when was planets and moons considered to be structures? :P Ref1: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/structure
They are called celestial objects, you dimwit ;P
Ref2: http://space.about.com/cs/glossar1/g/celestialobject.htm
Either way, I get your idea. But to be honest it already exists in-game as a feature, its called cloaking.

Negative Ghost Rider. You have failed epically.
Yes you are correect Planets and moons are not structures and I was not suggesting that they are either. Try reading before posting.
Secondly... Cloaking IS NOT the same. I want to be able to LAND on top of a station or on the side of an asteroid. Cloaking is not the same. Yargh. I be SGT Funyoun. |

Dude what on earth does that have to do with the fact that I am stuck in Iraq? I am on a base with nothing but me, my unit, and a chow hall. What else do you expect me to do? Yargh. I be SGT Funyoun. King of the Pirates!!! |

When I said cutting the engines to reduce signature I was thinking of how some players like to play. Not every player likes to use a cloak. A cloak limits the max speed of a ship and not every fit can have enough power to have a cloak. If I build a ship that can go 6000 m/s I would not want any mods cutting that down to nothing. I slap a Micro warp drive on a ship I want it to go fast. I get a ship up to 6000 and slap a cloak on it and now even with a MWD maxed out it only goes 345?!? What the heck good is that cloak gonna do me if I get blasted before I can even get close to a fast moving target?
Don't just sit there... Reply!!! Yargh. I be SGT Funyoun. King of the Pirates!!! |

Edited by: Laxyr on 10/08/2010 12:49:39 now, iirc a cloak only reduces your speed when active meaning you are cloaked when you're going that 3xx m/s you mentioned although I doubt that because you cannot activate your MWD while cloaked. The penalty you would have to live with while uncloaked is the reduction of scanresolution
While landing on asteriods sounds like an interesting idea at the first glance I don't think it would introduce anything new. Sure, you might have to sacrifice some dmg or tank in order to fit a cloak but it can be used for the same tactic you described.
Go to an asteriod belt - cloak - wait - decloak - attack prey. Now if your victim is fast enough, and has a cloak fitted, it can cloak while your sensors are recalibrating, leaving you with the task of decloaking.
