Ok, I have a friend I just got out into 0.0 cause they were getting bored with highsec missioning and I know ratting/anomolies are slightly better money. Now, they are fine when running with me (My char has about 10 months more SP than them.) but when they go out solo, usually doing the lowest level anomaly they can find, they have a hard time breaking the tank of some of the gurrista battlecruisers. They are sitting on 6 mil SP, are missile and shield based. They currently run on a drake but with their skills as they are now it is only pushing about 250 or so DPS (5 hobgoblin IIs included in that DPS, meaning their actual ship DPS is less than 150). Their tank is more than enough to survive but they basically run into a stalemate with the gurrista BCs, much less the battleships.
Any suggestions on a good low SP shield tanked T1 ship for ratting? Not expecting it to tank 3 battleships and destroy em all, just want to survive and kill the smallest anomalies, which at most spawn BCs. I just think it would be nice if they could rat on their own on days Im not available to help. >_>

For starters, they're in Drakes with a 50m3 drone bay and drone control bandwidth. Can I get one please?
Secondly, are they shooting Kinetic Missiles? Even with crap DPS they should be able to handle the rats.
Thirdly, the ship you're looking for is the Drake. Fit more BCSs and fewer SPRs if your tank is fine and your DPS is lacking.
Also, ratting Guristas? tsk tsk tsk...

Good point. Hobgoblin IIs then. Sorry, Im a minma pilot. Auto assumed Hammerheads. heh.
Appreciate the advice on that! Will definitely do that then. :) I suppose in the end the build is probably sacrificing DPS for survivability.

Try heavy assault missile launchers instead of heavy missiles (if thats what they are using) along with an afterburner (or MWD if you have enough PG) and a web to get in range of the rats. Personally i had the same problem against BS rats in low sec when i was a couple of months old. I found HAMs were much better dps.

Sweet, thanks! Yea they've been using 'limos' Heavy Missile launchers so far. We'll give HAMs a try :)

This is the advice I would give also. If the tank is "more than enough" as you said, start to lower it in favor of more DPS. Take off one SPR and replace it with a BCU. Still too much tank and not enough damage? Exchange another until there is better balance.
I would not advise your pals to stop training heavy missiles for Hams at this point. They are diluting their SP. For PVE (and PVP in my opinion) Heavy missiles have more use and flexibility than HAMs, but that is a debate for another thread.
Advise them to start leveling their support missile support and battlecruiser skills. This will allow them to start getting more damage without sacrificing time to train 2 systems at once.

With 6mil skillpoints my drake was over the 400dps mark using light drones and HMLs... Sounds like they are over tanked as stated. 2 BCUs minimum to get good DPS... I always run with 3 for maximum effect.
