Edited by: khendro on 21/07/2010 12:02:07 So we got CCP Launching Tyrannis as Planet interaction, but then we got these guys, a bunch of indie developers who are working on their own space MMORPG called Infinity: The Quest for Earth.
part1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7eREddMjt4&feature=player_embedded&fmt=22 part2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3muhlQYFgLE&feature=related&fmt=22
Quote: It's been many years since the release of the last video showcasing the seamless planetary engine, so I'm happy to release this new video. This is actually a video of the game client, but since there's little gameplay in it, I decided to label it as a "tech demo". It demonstrates an Earth-like planet with a ring, seamless transitions, a little spaceship ( the "Hornet" for those who remember ), a space station and a couple of new effects.
explanation on tech video: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=114&Itemid=26
I especially like part 2, when you see the "developer" enter the atmosphere of a planet without any loading screen. This is something which is made by a bunch of guys doing this parttime or more like a hobby. So why on earth can't CCP make something as cool as this? I mean, they worked so long on placing dots on a planet and these people did something that frigging owned their "major feature"....
And to make clear, i don't see this game become successful as they have NO budget and NO real publisher backing them up. The chances of actually surviving in the current MMO market are quite slim without any real financial backing.
EDIT:
Damnit didn't saw someone else made this topic just below :(

Look, it's this thread again.
Anyway, I believe it would involve re-doing the whole game in another engine.

It is a real shame the guys behind Infinity do not have the resources of a developer like CCP they could really make something awesome. In some ways they remind me a little of how CCP must have been in the early days when they had a vision and desire to make something awesome that no one had really done before and didn't really know what they where doing and had almost no resources but succeeded.
Now its like they are a bloated uninspired shareholders who only care about the subscription figures and do not give a toss about quality, and if you disagree with this just go and read that quote of a senior CCP guy saying that there is no reason why they should care about polishing the game because shiny half finished new things bring in more new players.

If developers make any serious changes to an old game, especially core programming changes and core game mechanic/design changes, especially in an MMO, the players are usually very angry. I mean they probably get hate mail and the forums fill up with flames whenever any change is made whatsoever in any MMO, so a huge change is like shooting yourself in the bank account, for the most part. This is a standard belief that things are perfect already and therefore any change is bad that is fostered by a strict and violent hierarchy that is present in all places and is financially and violently enslaving, in that the people who already are able to survive by sitting still and following directions while acting busy and lying consistently are able to survive because they do that, and thus if they stop or if things change they will not be the ones eating, they will be the ones entering the government torture facilities due to necessity of crime during starvation or financial desperation, to which many enter and few leave.

Exactly.
It is supposed to have billions of star systems. Assuming the game will ever have one million players, you would meet approximately one of them per 1000 systems. Sure, there will be trade hubs, where lots of players will be. This will make them the only places where player interaction can happen. Basically, if the developer doesn't think of a solution to this problem, there will be a dozen systems that are actually used, and billions no one will care about.

This will never make it as an mmo as afaik the database hardware doesn't exist yet that can keep up with a billion star systems and a million simultaneous users and still be able to relay any new info to anyone who cares to look it up in anything like real time. I'm betting on him getting a deal with a gullable small time publisher and making it into some type of x-3 clone on a massive scale that you can play with your friends online like in freelancer. That would certainly be doable with the scope of the game.

Edited by: Vogue on 23/07/2010 20:12:58 Chris Braben who did the original Elite on 8-bit computers used a Fibonacci math sequence to create a consistent galaxy within 22k!
copypasta:-
In 1984 Ian Bell and David Braben, the creators of Elite, had produced a game that was capable of defining a thoroughly believable universe containing 2 to the power of 48 galaxies ū thatĘs 282,000,000,000,000 possible destinations to fly to, all within the 22k available memory of the BBC Model B computer. The final release of Elite had this number substantially reduced ū 8 galaxies of 256 stars each ū on the insistence of publishers Acornsoft, because a universe of such a size would be too daunting, and would likely induce a minor existential crisis in the player, making them question how such a place had been created.

This is assuming a single server is used.
Multiple servers can be used, Planet Server + System Server + Item Server + Interaction Server, all updated separately by a main connection server that processes all the data coming from and to a player.
If Google can figure out how to search through billions of web pages in a fraction of a second, so can these guys. Parallel computing ftw.

Then explain how you get market lag in jita on the supposed most awesome mmo database hardware that is used in eve. Now scale that up to a million concurrent users and a billion systems. Besides google just caches keywords and other relevant stuff with their bots and then runs it through their software which then forwards you the results. This is not the same as running a realtime searchable database for an mmo with the untold amount of unique items and their attendent stats.

EVE uses Microsoft SQL Server which is not the most heavy weight DB server out there. I would have thought something like IBM DB2 would be better.

database optimization algorithms. I would not be able to come up with a better idea if I don't know how ccp designed their database. I would assume splitting orders into categories and each category into a different table, for faster searching.
market orders into another set of tables.
disgusting to code and organize but faster look-up per row.
split the market into say mini markets, if the client does a market call make it call the specific market he is looking for, like FindPrice(10mn mwd) vs FindPrice_ShipEquipment_Navigation(10mn mwd).
the web service would be hell and a half to manage but it would be mostly copy-paste code and should be faster lookups.
just an idea -shrugs-
RE: MS db servers - i thought oracle was the optimal for massive scale usage.
