I am a noob to jump technology. Can anyone please answer me the following questions:
Which kind of ships can be jumped via a Covert Jump Portal Generator I?
What is the maximum distance for a jump?

All of this has been covered before in other threads, I think you'll even find basically all the information you're requesting in the 'How to fix the Sin' thread below, but, for your convenience:
'Jumpable' ships: Blockade Runners, T3's with a Covert Ops subsystem. Covert Ops frigs, Stealth bombers, Cloaky Recons and other Black ops BS's.
Maximum jump range is about 4.5ly's from memory.

If it can use a CovOps Cloak, it can use the Covert Jump Bridge.

Black Ops ships actually can't use a CovOps Cloak even though they can build and use Covert Jump Bridges. Just thought I would clarify that.
As other has said, Stealth Bombers, Covert Ops Frigates, Strategic Cruisers w/ Cloaking Subsystem, Force Recon Ships (Not Combat Recon Ships), Blockade Runners and Black Ops Battleships can all use the Covert Jump Bridge.

Considering that you use about 180 iso per ly with the jump drive and 4800+ iso per ly via the portal, I figured only the daft would seriously consider it.
Nearly 40ly versus not even 1.5 ly on a full tank of fuel seems self explanditory.
Everything that uses CovOps Cloak can use Covert Bridge, everything else can't or isn't worth it.

If the ship has the attribute Jump Harmonics = 2, it can use the Covert Portal. That is the definitive answer.
