Edited by: Nortel on 22/07/2010 19:53:11 Basically I'd like to join a corp and have fun but not get scammed in the process.
Here is the story.. I did some research a while back and determined that I'd like a PvP corp in 0.0 preferably with sovereignty. I looked for a corp where I could run with stealth bomber ops and thought I found a winner but this ultimately wasn't the case at all. Although I joined the corp's vent server, had a chat with them and got a "good feel" for them, this was all basically a show they were putting on. To check the validity of the corp, I checked the members count, (roughly a solid 50 members), tax rate 5.0% and alliance membership, it had plenty of other large members corps, their info sheet said they were recruiting. The recruiter said he had his jump freighter in null sec and to have me contract my ships over for transporting them to their AO right then. He even brought someone else in acting as another recruit and had him say that he was also contracting over his stuff, probably in an attempt to not raise my suspicion by making it look like this was a routine process in recruiting someone. I did a cost-benefit analysis at this point and figured if I could be ratting in null sec for hundreds of millions of isk a week, even if I lost all my ships, I would have made up the price difference in virtually no time. So I contracted my ships for him to transport, then yes you guessed it: he banned me from the vent and threw me into his channel with an ascii art middle-finger, you can guess where it went from there. I was out 240 mil in ships (not much). Having previously been in a WH ops corp with a POS and a ship hanger that I routinely stored all my ships in, I didn't think that corps scamming potential or full members was a rampant issue but it clearly seems that way to me now.
I see the contract scams in local chat all the time but I didn't think that this type of scam was around because I was under the impression that my 240 mil in ships were pocket-change and relatively useless to a corp. I let my guard down on this. I'll never join a corp if I ever have to start by mixing my own assets with the corp no matter how little or much that I have. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't get scammed more than 240 because I can make that up in a few days of mission running. In general, it taught me to never handle joining a corp this way, ever ever ever again.
Thanks for your thoughts.
tl;dr How do you handle joining a corp or recruiting for your corp? Will a good PvP corp with 0.0 sovereignty generally accept an applicant that won't bring their ships or ISK with them? If they don't, how do you get around this obvious problem?

When I joined Star Fraction, it was a very easy process. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1346158
I applied, agreed to their basic principles.
Interview. 1 week comment period. I was accepted.
I didn't have to give them anything up front. Just move my own ships. They offered help moving my stuff, for a fee, but not a big deal at all.
I also got all the free punch, pie and unlimited supply of rookie ships as a signing bonus...
As for your situation, live and learn I guess. Perhaps you could have done it as a contract where they pay you a deposit which they get back only when the goods have been moved and returned to you.

Your logic is broken.
The fact that it happened to you does not make it a "rampant issue".
Out of random curiosity, was it Goonswarm?

I know I'm engaging in fallacious reasoning in that respect to generalize like that but there may still be hope if it isn't a widespread one. I just figured that's usually what happens since scams are usually all that I find in local and on these forums. If people aren't blasting at each-other or trying to flip cans, they seem to be out scamming.
Corp was "Global Gang Bangers" in Two Inch Terror alliance.
I don't have a grudge but the credibility is completely gone along with my trust in any corp no matter how connected or large they seem.

Vocal minority.
No one posts on the forums saying how they just spent a week mining but nothing else happened.
Next time you go to Jita do a quick count;
How many people are spamming scams? How many people in local? Does it work out to only about 1% of them trying to scam you?
How many ships sitting at the dock waiting to gank a good target? How many ships docking and undocking every minute? Does it work out to a very small percentage of pvpers?
The majority of eve players are not out to scam or shoot you, and the majority of null sec corps will not be looking to rip you off if you want to join.
You were unlucky / made a bad choice. Look for another corp and try again.

Edited by: Maia Demoncast on 23/07/2010 00:37:32 I think you are more likely to get scammed joining an industrial type of corp. Scams are difficult to pull of if the mark is paying attention. Looks like you thought that they might be scamming you but decided to go ahead and contract your stuff anyway, so the best advice would be to trust yourself more next time.
Also google your potential corp, if it was in fact Global Gang Bangers, then they seemed to have scammed in the past, so just skip a corp with scamming history.

As a way to not get scammed in the future, I would suggest not contracting all of your stuff to the corp that you just joined a few hours ago.
Most corps won't (and shouldn't) give brand new members full access to all of their stuff. They also will check the character history, and mail some previous CEO's and stuff like that. In the same way, you shouldn't give a brand new corp full access to all your stuff and should probably check them out on the forums and ask around about them.
It's near impossible to get scammed if you exercise even a little common sense. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

Edited by: Baka Lakadaka on 23/07/2010 02:02:35 There are plenty of reputable PvP corps out there. In fact I'd go so far as to say the majority are reputable.
There are scammers, as in any other aspect of the game. Researching your prospective corp is important. Google and www.eve-search.com are a good start. Check the C&P forum using eve-search. ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University |

Confirming that I too was scammed by a Two Inch Terror corp.

Edited by: Tom Willson on 23/07/2010 11:34:12 Just some general tips for when you first move to 0.0 with a new corp:
1: Only give them something cheap to haul, it's usually enough with 10m worth of ships as NPC BS' can easily be killed in the belts with a mere cruiser. If you need bigger ships try and buy them down there, usually good alliances offer you cheap ships up to BS level.
2: If you do get a ship down there make sure it can stay in space indefinately (cloak + MWD for moving between gates, try to use a ship that doesn't use ammo but that's only if you got Amarr/drone/ships. This way you've got a chance to get back home if these guys turn out to stab you in the back.
3: If you do need something expensive moved in the future try and move it in batches, i.e. you let them know on day 1 that you want a BS moved, then another a few days after, then another, etc.
If it seems like you have befriended these guys and they seem trustworthy in a month then yeah... You can lighten up a bit on the security, I suppose.
This also works for all corps, WH's and low sec. If you're going for a PvP run/Sleeper run with them then use the cheapest, most effective, fitting you can. That way you'll learn a cheaper lesson in who to trust.
Edit: Clarified a few points.

Baka Lakadaka, I have to disagree with you for once. My characters have been members of more than 5 Null sec corp/alliances. They almost uniformly sucked.
Absentee CEOs, CEOs who would have been better as absentees, idiots, thrill seekers and all with heads swelled so big that no hat in the world would fit them. No logistics chain. No help or else conflicting advice. Rather than use the word I'm thinking of, buttheads with god complexes.
As I've said several times before, if you want to be in a 0.0 Alliance that you can live with, form your own. Pick your non-alliance allies very carefully. PvP only when necessary. Fights will find you often enough that you don't need to go looking for them.
I've finally found a corp that just moved to 0.0 and seems good for the moment, but, once again, the alliance has some serious issues.
