That video makes me sad for what PI ended up being, but hopefully they manage to put some of that stuff into PI in coming iterations. The video describes some interesting things like districts, trade between players on the same planets, colonists, pollution etc. It's a real shame none of that made it into the expansion.
I heard an interesting rumour that the PI team had created all kinds of nice stuff like population management, player-interaction and such. Proper sim-style gameplay. The higher-ups were allegedly spotted at a conference where Zynga were giving a talk on Farmville and its 80 million users. According to the rumour, the CCP execs completely lost their objectivity and ordered the PI team to make PI more like farmville, where you have to come back daily to "renew your crops". Whether the rumour is true or not, that mechanic is exactly what we got.
If it IS true, it would show how little the CCP execs actually understand the MMO industry. Farmville has 80 million users because of its aggressive viral spread through Facebook, not because they encourage players to come back every ay to click some buttons. The ability to play it in a browser creates an extremely low barrrier to entry that a subscription game simply cannot match. Furthermore, the reason farmville is set up to encourage people to log in and play daily is because they generate their income via active gameplay. That business model is only supportable in microtransaction-based MMOs, not a subscription MMO. Microtransaction-based MMOs typically offer players consumables and shortcuts in gameplay (xp potions, teleport runes, better mounts etc) in exchange for cash and so make more money if people play the game more actively. Subscription MMOs don't, they generate the same income whether players log in every day and play or not.
Again, this is just a rumour. But it's one I find plausible.

Sounds like a legit hypothesis Nyphur and if it is true, it is really sad that the execs did not realize what you said. That or they are EVILE and did it so players would have to log in more often.

I think CCP go by that industry standard time measurement set by Valve. http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time

In fairness CCP representatives have said a few times now that what we see in Tyrannis is only the beginning of P.I. I know its never easy to say for certain what features will get 'finished' in subsequent expansions but the vibe is that P.I. has had a lot of love laboured on it just to bring it this far and in the short and long term is highly relevant to both Incarna and Dust. I'm sure that there is plenty more to come on this aspect of Eve. I think for a tentative first foray it looks and plays OK and its pretty evident from the way it works now how CCP intend to build upon the foundations they have laid with the scanning, skillset, basic extraction and production processes.
I personally don't agree that P.I. should be accessible to newbs though, I think that makes a mockery of all those guys who spent months training their industry and mining skills etc. and obviously plays in to the hands of farmers. It also seems highly unlikely that new players will be able to compete in high sec for resources anyway - even without the extra 'professional' competition. The apparent ease with which this feature can be 'spammed' by multiple accounts needing only a measly 1m skill points and how it is frankly trivial to macro/script is also deeply disconcerting.

It's worth it now for making ISK. It's just not a very fun game mechanic.

I bought some BPOs from the PI list. They are being researched now. I expect in 3 months or so, after they are at the PE I want them at they might be worth copying and manufacturing. |

Is there actually a point in high-PE blueprints, unless you wanna produce stuff real fast and flood the market? You know that in 3 months you'll be able to actually produce & sell more than you'll get benifit from 3 month-long research, right? If, by chance, you were referring to ME, I hope you'll be delighted to read this

I hate to ruin everyone's impression of our overlords but has people forgotten this is a business that is driven off of monthly subscriptions? It is purely driven by the business model of keeping your players logged in and playing for as long as possible. Why do you think games like WoW keep drawing out the level cap? Do give you new fun toys? No! To keep you playing longer.
That is why our skill system is setup the way it is. If our skill system was use based you'd have power gamers who would have all skills maxed out by now and they would have done it months and months earlier. With having skills take (relatively) the same amount of time across the board, now everyone waits 15 days to train Mining Barge to lvl 5.
PI wasn't put out for our benefits. It was put out because some number cruncher thought out this scenario: - It takes on average 10-15 minutes per day per character to startup the extractors. - Multiply that by 30 days = 5 hours a month @ 10 mins. - That is 500,000 hours a month spent per 100,000 players. - AT 24 hours that is about 20,000 month equivelants.
You do the math.
