well here in the UK we already have police and paramedics on bikes, and now it seems like the fire and rescue service will be joining them..

I like it. Assuming the fire is small this is actually a great idea.

If I see anything on fire when I'm travelling around town its invariably some car on the side of the road so this would be perfect for a highway deployment where a huge truck would have issues getting through the backed up traffic. Can't believe this has never been done before as it makes so much sense.

Edited by: Drudging on 23/07/2010 19:27:51 Got to play with one of those compressed air/afff systems when i was still volunteering, was a bit larger, they are surprisingly effective. Not having to rebed a hose for something minor is a wonderful thing.
Personally i'd rather see something like that on a light rescue truck. Would like to see more medical equipment, more gallons of afff, some hydraulic tools, and a crew larger than one roll up if i had to call
edit: Shameless go volunteer at your local fire department edit, almost all departments are hurting for people... oh and cutting up cars, smashing windows, kicking down doors legally and then being thanked for it afterwards is fun |

that is a really good idea, since lots of non accident car fires especially have nobody to pull out normally.
i could see this expanded to the light pickup trucks used by some departments for non pumper/tanker tasks. here in the US such hardware could without much issue be adapted to the Tahoes and Suburbans used by many FDs.

Halfwits, bikes are for commies, airborne is where it's at, paramedics, paratroopers, you get the idea. Let the fire know who is boss, hose from above!

where the hell do you drive, the ghetto?
even American cars don't burst into flames that often.
Also, Definitely an upgrade over this

ignoring the obvious chances to comment on hawt fire fighters on bikes...
I think it's an awesome idea. Here in Chicago, Police regularly do bike patrols and ATV patrols in downtown and the northside (they'd be ****ing stupid to try that on the southside lawlz). Can't say I've ever seen fire fighters though.

Its a great idea but what worries me is that in Britain the kind of toerags that set fire to things like cars and dustbins for entertainment also like to throw bricks at emergency vehicles and assault the crews, it makes me wonder how safe it would be to send a lone firefighter into some of those rough council estates.

sounds good, but how the hell is the dispatcher going to know about the size of the fire in advance? can't trust that when the fire is reported that it will always be accurate info... Going to use their vast network of spy cams to determine the size of the blaze?

Heh big brother. The uk is ****ing full of cameras. Dont get me wrong they have a few good uses but over all its a mad invasion of privacy.
As for the firefighting bikes... intresting idea. Im unsure how usefull they will actually be in a real world situation however.

I can't remember which country it was in but a lead fire fighter ("the boss") always appears at the site of the fire minutes before the trucks, to check if there is a fire and of what size. This procedure might get faster onboard a bike, easier to drive through traffic etc.

Yup, by having a motorcycle arrive on the scene quickly the location can be checked and the status reported before the main engines arrive. That way if it's a prank call the engine can be called off making it available for other call outs. Also if the bike arrived and the fire was larger than expected or needed specialist equipment then that could be relayed to the appropriate people and the overall efficiency of the brigade would increase.

Not to mention that when this catches on there will be many refinements to the bikes with a built from the ground up version no doubt getting made that will have all sorts of goodies stashed away in whatever nooks and crannies they design in. Plus with a purpose made bike you could probably double or triple the amount of time you have to use the fire hose.

and i bet two bikes in the whole trip to the fire and back to the fire house use less fuel than is consumed just starting the engine on a big pumper truck.
