Does the position of the words "to" and "not" really affect the meaning of these sentences?
Perseverance is a virtue that few can afford not to practice.
Perseverance is a virtue that few can afford to not practice.
Or is there an even better way to wright the above sentance?

Perseverance is a virtue that few can afford to (not practice).
In this case, no. in every case, probably not.
this is known as an infinitive of the verb (it takes two words to make the infinitive in English).
in most cases, "not to" is preferred to "to not"

Unnecessary usage of the word 'that', 'perseverance' is a known virtue, so I guess there is no need to call it something it already is.
(This is similar to the movies when a character says 'we have an emergency situation', which is frickn' ******ed as 'an emergency' is already self-defining as 'a situation' anyway)
It's a horrible sentence, no matter how you look at it.
What is it you are trying to say?

Thanks for the replies. They have been taken to heart.
As for what I was trying to get across.
I work at a physical rehabilitation hospital where we deal with patients dealing with strokes, traumatic brain injury, and other impairments. Many of these people obviously deal with many deficits that leave them feeling helpless, so daily we post a quasi motivational quote on the date board. Today the internet was down so searching for a good one was not possible so I made one, which now seems to be a fail, quote.
An old Navy officer came in and scoffed at the quote at which point I read it again and it said what I wanted to say, but I realized that it was not even close to efficient. So I came here and proceeded to make a thread where I also utterly failed in spelling, which is something that is of normal occurrence here anyway. But yeah, even though English is my only language I fail at it quite often and I know there a more than a few pilots here that are well versed in grammar

In trying to get across what should be a simple point, you've built what can at best be described as a rather long and awkward sentence. How about 'Everyone needs perseverance.' ? --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

I think MLA and proofreading is really about censorship and lies. There is a natural way to speak and it mirrors the natural way to write. It is a more honest way of communication, and it is true and uncensored, as well as easier to understand for people without a trained aversion to the natural way of writing, after being told honestly that failure to write in the correct, censored, proofread, and common ways is a certain ticket to bad things happening to you. That being said, I think the time is near for people to behave in a more honest and natural way, which will be more effective and productive and should hopefully cause widespread morale boosts.

When a sentence sounds wrong no matter how you order the words, simply change the sentence.
"Everyone can afford to learn perserverence" or for more emphasis, "Everyone should learn perserverence".
Using negatives in sentences often makes them sound confusing. Avoid it unless there is no other suitable alternative. EVE Trivia EVE History

Who uses Comic Sans?
For motivation why not use Helvetica, Georgia, Tahoma, Calibri, Verdana, or Univers?
