I'm somewhat new to Eve online (six weeks or so).
I joined after a friend loaned me the novelization ("Eve: The Empyrean Age"). I was looking forward to joining up with the re-formed Caldari Meritocracy and expanding the empire.
I love the game, don't get me wrong, but it was somewhat disappointing to see that there is virtually no reason besides ship design philosophy and beginning standings to go with Caldari, Gallente, Amarr, or Minmatar. The militia system is kinda silly, and serves no real purpose that I can tell.
Are there any plans to spark Faction warfare in the future? Will we see the Gallente push back and attack the Caldari? Will we see the Minmatar elders rise up again and hand the self-righteous Amarr their butt-ocks?
Now, I thoroughly detest the other MMO created by that other company because of their "shards". I think it makes any progress you make ultimately pointless. I do love the interconnectedness that EVE enjoys. However, sometimes it feels like there isn't really a point to having joined a race. Someone referred to it as "Wing Commander Privateer as played with Homeworld controls."
I understand the difficulty, as it is the same issue that Star Wars Galaxies faced: You can't have a supposed uniform army have individualized equipment, and people will not likely want to play a character they have no opportunity to mod.
If nothing like this exists or is in the works, I had a possible solution: people who elect to not lead the privateer path and instead go "career soldier" would do all their trading in the established "loyalty points" with their given faction. Each player would be in charge of NPCs who are equipped uniformly. That way, you'd have a standardized frontline soldier unit, but the Player Character would be able to individualize (but with Faction equipment, of course). The Player would be removed from the standard monetary system and have his ability to gain access to higher level equipment within their faction based on kills/increased kill/death ratios (to included kills/NPC deaths?). That way, there would be reason to go out and kill all PC and NPC characters that a given faction were currently at war with.
Taxes would be pushed from a "global" tax to a "border" tax as levied by the factions, so doing trade in one section would be preferable to another. The NPC characters' ships would be upgraded from upper management, who would also ensure supply lines were kept up for the NPC's repair and upgrade.
Soldiers would also have their own PvE missions. Higher-up Soldiers that wanted to enter into CEO type roles would have higher ranks and be in charge of more logistical pursuits, including interfacing with markets to get the materials necessary to make more advanced
In any case, are there plans for a major Faction warfare push? Am I missing something? Would people be interested in that at all?

Unfortunately everything pertaining to the spaceship side of Eve Online has been put on an 18 month hold while they work on 2 other projects. I suggest you read this thread and the dev blog that spawned it for more information.

Edited by: Ti''anla on 23/07/2010 22:24:41 Unfortunately the poster above is one of the idiots interpreting 'We will focus on fixing, optimising, and polishing the space-borne part of EVE Online after the next three development cycles. Until then, the aforementioned will remain a secondary concern as it long has' as 'We're not going to do anything AT ALL to improve your precious internet spaceships for 18 months so nyer'. I suggest you ignore him and his attempt to derail your topic in favour of his stealth whingeing.
That being said, I believe your thread ought have been posted here, in the Features and Ideas Discussion forum. If so, hopefully a moderator will shift it for you soon.
To answer your question at the end, however, Faction Warfare is one of the elements the developers have said they hope to focus heavily on once Incarna 1.0 has been deployed, as well as heavy game balancing and other incomplete elements. Exactly what this will mean, we'll have to wait and see, but I'm sure it can't hurt your putting your ideas up for discussion.

Unfortunately the poster above needs to train "reading dev blog" to at last 2.
Obvious CCP alt is obvious.

Edited by: Ti''anla on 23/07/2010 22:35:47 And so we resort to personal attacks, the offering of development blogs nowhere say 'we're going to ignore the space stuff for 18 months', and the accusation of being a staff-alt for trying to be useful. Well, whatever, my last post responding to the berk above, further replies will be ignored: obvious prat, and likely troll is obvious.
Oh and on the subject of the OP, it seems a nice idea. Dunno how workable it'd be but you do raise issues will hopefully get addressed. Faction Warfare does lack a compelling reson d'etre, as it were.

So which one are you? Can't be Zulu cause that guy doesn't have 2 braincells to put together. You on the other hand can at least put a sentence together...
Keep it in the dev blog thread CCP whomever. I was just giving the op a link to some important info about his request.
You know, about fixing FW?
Yeah. Done with mouth-breathers like you.

Hey m8, I'd be really happy (honestly really happy) to debate the current ****storm with you in a non-public thread. I didn't want to derail this but it happened and to the op I am sorry.
And I too apologize for my flippancy towards you. I admit it was rude. Emotions can make us say/type things we wouldn't otherwise say/type.
And again for the op all I have to say is this: My original reply is 100% valid. Educate yourself and come to your own conclusions.

Edited by: Ti''anla on 23/07/2010 23:36:40 Hu... yeah, you're right. Sorry to the OP, I've as much hand in derailing the thread if not more, I guess. You might likely do well to post your suggestion again in Features and Ideas rather than move it (assuming I was right about it needing to go there) to rid it of our squabble.
And, well, tell you what 'Saturday, I can't promise to be hugely responsive - 'specially since I'm away for a week on Sunday - but.. if you do fancy, feel free to chuck an in-game mail my way. I'll at least be able to pick it up on the Gate.
Oh and I'll go back and clean up my posts, too; derailment limitation and all that.
