I got a similar rig about 6 months ago - works just great P4 3ghz, 800mhz fsb 1gb ddr400 ram 120g SATA drive and a 128mb GeForce 4 Ti that I poached from an older pc.
The older graphics card still runs 1280 x 1024 on a 17" LCD with good framerate (I like my VSync turned ON!!) - even with loads of other ships on screen.
Im sure there will be a few AMD fanboys telling you to stick with that, but I wouldnt go back to my Athlon for anything. Stability = good mmkay? -- jamesw Rubra Libertas Militia

I'd much rather wait a month or 2, then get an Athlon64 with a nForce4 motherboard (PCI-Express). If the upgrade is urgent though...
Anyhow, using the X300 is pretty much pointless, it's not much better than a low-end Geforce FX if even that. Better invest a bit more and get a X700 or a Geforce 6600GT - X300 for a gaming rig is like using Standard Missile Launchers on a Raven.
