I was having a reading a forum the other day regarding female players in mmorpg's and just wondering if the same apply's to EvE.I see a lot of female avatars in this game, but are they really female?Just wondering how many girls play Eve? Given it has a mature player base(well so far)and not a lot of annoying kids thinking they own the feck'in place...

3% - 5% of the player base.
Why does it matter?

Last thingy I saw said the ration of male to female players in Eve is 187.3:1

it matters I guess most weirdos play with a female character, some just use it because they're decent looking at least; you can however weed out the weird people by this- you'd be surprised to see a name Anna something with a pretty female avatar and turns out in audio he's some fat hairy spy
same goes with minmatar jar heads/clown snot avatar users, those are really the people you can be skeptical of- dunno what clowns do in a sci-fi simulator (not forgetting numerous things like air vents of a space ship) but yea, you can tell from a character but not entirely so |

As a guy with more than a little experience behind the scenes with MMO's (MOD on another game) let me say that some folk you think are dudes are gals, and most gals are dudes. I play a female on one account elsewhere (and an alt here)I play a female not to be weird but because I am a roleplayer. Roleplaying a female is a nice challenge, the one I play here is a throw away, I don't interact much with the community, so it is nothing, on another game I play a female on, I am a MOD, EXCEPT for that character, as a MOD hiding my identity is hard, but I so enjoy being anonymous with that ALT.
Most men who play gals on MMO's try too hard to be girly or sexy, the ones that do it well are just one of the girls. Girls who play MMO's tend to come across as dudes who are playing girls since they are trying to fit in to a male dominated society. No disrespect intended to the girls here, I am relating my experience with females and MMO's yeah what ever |

You'd be surprised.
Not me though, I'm a guy. I was under the impression that character portraits were completely meaningless and static. We all were. Now that Incarna is coming along "soon", I'd like to rethink my decision. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

First off ... there is the concept of "Me".
When I first started playing Planetside, my first MMO, the character I created was "Me". I tried to pick the character face that most resembled me when I was young. I represented that character in game as "Me".
Then one day I wanted to drive a tank. My very own tank. My very own tank - where I could have a decent gunner (myself) and a decent driver (also myself) - who knew how to play the game and wasn't some hyper active kid yelling at me to "MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!". I kicked more than one guy out of my tank for doing that and finally decided to just create another account and have my own gunner. Both these guys were ... guys ... but ... the second guy wasn't "Me" ... the second guy was the Gunner ... not ... "Me".
Then ... I wanted to see what it was like to drive the other two Empire's tanks ... There were (at that time) still 3 other servers so I made a pair of characters on each and used them to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the other tanks. None of these guys was "Me". They were just avatars I controlled.
Here ... while I had thought of my original character as "Me" ... the more I played with my other avatars - the more the original "Me" stopped being "Me" and simply became another avatar.
Then the subject came up of guys playing chick characters. One guy said "I like to look at their ass as I'm running them around in 3rd person POV," and I thought ... "Hmmmm ..." That led me to create my first chick character - and sure enough - gazing at her pixelated posterior was more pleasant than gazing at the back side of a male character ... so I made more of them ... lots and lots more of them. From then on - I tended to make more female characters than male characters. The concept of "Me" had long since vanished. These were all now merely game avatars I was controlling and nothing more.
When I got to EVE ... the first character I made ... was again ... "Me" ... but the second character was not. I actually still think of that original EVE character as "Me" but ... that's about it. The one I'm posting with now - I created primarily as a forum alt. It isn't "Me" either ... but it represents "Me" - if you get the distinction. I made this character a male - as I was using it to represent myself and I had noticed with other characters I have posted with - that people tend to regard the posters as female ... even though we should all know better.
There are a few people who try and pass themselves off as being females IRL ... by using female avatars ... but ... hardly anyone does that. Simply because - this is an MMO - and everyone knows that the number of actual females actually playing a space ship game ... doesn't come close to the number of female avatars out there.
I think ... just a guess ... that the people who think that people playing female avatars are posing as females ... come from games where they only had one character. In that situation ... there's a much greater tendency to identify with your character. For those of us who've mostly played games with multiple characters (PS allowed 8 per account) that thought never crosses our mind. I for one - am always surprised when I get hit on by some guy ... I'm like "Dude ... this is an MMO ... of course I'm not a female IRL ..."
Of course, the flip side of all that is the females who play male avatars - specifically so they won't be hit on.
Now ... one more reason for males controlling female avatars ... there are ... some ... gamers ... who ... lets just say ... can't get a date. For them - to be able to Control a female - even if only an avatar ... has some appeal to it. So ... that might be another reason.
But males pretending to be females ... hardly ever happens. It does happen ... these two 12 year old boys playing PS posted pictures of their cute female neighbors on the forums claiming that was them ... but that is rare ... and they caught hell for it when they owned up.

I generally play females in games like this because the male avatars usually look very, very stupidly bad. Like the split lip on the human male characters in the game that shall not be named, the male matari in this game aren't all that great, and so on. Not just the "want to look at a cute azz when i run HUR!" but if i am going to look at an avatar for a great length of time, i want it to look decent, male or female. _

I don't like stereotypes so I play both female and male.
"Big guy, big muscles, yeah, it's a warrior for sure" "Girls are casters"
etc
I am not my characters, I always look at my characters from a RP perspective even though I don't RP that much.

Nah, you guys aren't THAT rare. I think 3% was what CCP published in one of the econ devblogs, but it was a while ago. So with a daily average of 45k people online, that would be 1350 women.
Doesn't matter, though, none of them are online when I'm online , and otherwise if I log on at odd hours, their guns hurt as much as anybody else's, and that's all I see.

Only 3-5%? That's less then I expected. Well, I'm used to WoW, we're more prevalent there. I tried playing men in games, but I can't get the feeling for them, so in the end I always end up playing women. Same here.

Wait for walking in stations. All you will see are sexy young girls with dance emoticons above their heads.
On the other side i NEVER heard a female voice on teamspeak/vent, but i might have choosen the wrong corporations.
So i rather go with 3 - 5 than 3% - 5%.

There used to be two girls in my alliance, but now it's just me.
Also, for those of you who seriously think it's only 3 - 5, Mynxee will have to introduce you to the Hellcats.
I mean, hell, we had six actual females run for the CSM this time around.
We're not as rare as you might think. We just don't have to overact the part.

It's the same for me.
A male avatar I'd try to make into "me". After two hours fiddling around with the character creator I stopped trying cause with the existing options I just couldn't do it "right". So I threw an appealing (for me) girl avatar together in like 5 minutes tops. Typed in an Iain M. Banks inspired name and was good to go.
Maybe I'll do a "me" once Incarna hits but I doubt it. Even after a quite short time into the game I can't be bothered to relearn all the skills on a new character for sure.

In my experience about 1 out of 50 players are female, so around 2%. A corp of around 100 players (players, not characters) will likely have 0-4 female players. If you just keep to a small corp of friends then you are unlikely to meet any girl gamers. Or in other words, you guys are doing a very poor job of introducing your girlfriends, female friends, co-workers, mistresses, and wives to EVE.

This will not work!
My GF HATES eve. Sometimes i think she hates ME when i¦m obviously playing eve. You should see how she¦s looking at me (saying nothing) at this occations. Sometimes i fear she might do something to me, while i¦m looking at the monitor. Usually i stop playing than.
And you want me to introduce her to eve? You can try that!

I use male characters when I know I'll be more of 'myself', for example my main character who's in a 0.0 corp is a male avatar. I find it odd when someone asks for 'tammi' in vent and some dude who sounds like he's smoked one too many cigarettes responds, I'd like to not be that guy. However my hauling and mission running alts are both female avatars. That said we do have 3 RL females in my alliance, that's 3 out of 800 or so...
IMHO the only male avatars that don't look freakish are the Caldari Deteis and the Minmatar Brutors. The Gallente males look like they're on their way to Studio 54, those circusfreak Minnie toons just make me laugh while the Ammar males look like child-snatching pedos. Furthermore every time I see an Archura male I want to punch him in the face, I cannot wait for Incarna so I can walk up to one and beat him senseless...

People have different reasons for using a female or male avatar.
Way too many male gamers are pathetic and become wierd stalkers around girls so some might want to hide their gender.
The same pathetic guys will do anything for someone they think is a girl, so if you want to have a easy time in a mmorpg you can pretend to be a girl and see isk etc sent to you from random guys and have a lot of people wanting to help you.
Dont bother thinking about it. It doesnt matter.

Did a guy who named his character after an actor famous for playing a homoerotic tween werewolf in a movie about sparkly vampires really just lecture us about how roleplaying is creepy?
