The EVE-Gate nebula background looks pretty sharp. Then I log on to EVE and the background looks dated and cartoonish.
Any chance of an update come next expansion? |

Has it really been more than 18 months since Trinity? My, how time flies.
I wonder what the future holds.

How about nebula that doesn't wash out everything on the display and require UV sunshades? That would be really great, thanks.

This times a billion. That or just let me disable it altogether, black with these little white dots all over would be just fine thank you very much.

While the nebulae themselves were never updated, the stars have in fact been updated.

Yeah good point - I do like the new stars. The nebulas really need redone though, I think it would be a really huge improvement to Eve's environment. Flying 20 jumps might not be so monotonous.
Same goes for gas clouds in missions - zooming out makes them look like a tiny cloud in a space of nothing. Not very immersive.

Eve Nebula = Space Lower Intestines
Something to think about... Real Nebula start to disapear the closer you get to them. Sun/Earth could be in a Nebula as seen from another star system but the gas is so disperse, you don't see it up close. Same with smog in your yard, but miles away you can see the effect.
But yes... I'll sign this post, there is a lot of real sources for Nebula images out there that could be used.

IIRC the nebulae were updated as well. They used to be a lot less transparent.

They minimized the nebulae, they used to be more dense than they are now.

Signed, nebulas are borred, any chance for new background texture ?,after jump every system have same nebula only diffirence is color ;/ in real space we have a lot diffirent type of nebulas, plese look a lot awesome examples.

Probably not in the next expansion.
Trinity was the first round of Renovation (ships, gates, stations), Apocrypha was the second Renovation (dead-space stuff and asteroids). Then we upgraded planets and moons, the dust field and the star field in Dominion and Tyrannis.
We have done preliminary work for the nebulas, there is code support to distribute them such that there is more gradual change as you travel from one system to the next but there is immense art work yet to be done.

≡v≡ once was about internet spaceships. Then those became serious business. Now all that's left, serious business, and spaceships are docked for two years till after the Dust of Incarna. |

Rather than having the art team hand-draw loads of new nebulae, have you considered procedurally generating them? I've been doing a lot of work recently on procedurally generating galactic skyboxes with procedural nebulae, stars at different distances etc. It's certainly feasible to automagically generate skyboxes as good as (or better than) the current ones and the degree of customisation you can build into a system like that is huge. You could easily automatically generate a new skybox for every single solar system and have them more gradually run into each other with colour and composition changes, and common objects in the backgrounds of systems near each other like nebulae, constellations, black holes etc.
Or perhaps you could use the existing texturecube lookup in a new shader that adds some procedural perturbation using a fractal pattern based on zoom level. So when we zoom in, we would appear to discover more detail to the existing backgrounds. I envy whoever's working on the project if you have something cool like that or procedural generation in the works.

I just assumed that's what he meant by "there is immense art work yet to be done." If they were already planning a procedural or shader-based rethink of the EVE backgrounds, there really wouldn't be much art work to be done. So I assume they plan to at least redraw the current ones in higher resolution.

The graphics for the 50k+ planets were procedurally done. Only makes sense that they would also do this for the Nebulae.

The nebulas are immersion breaking for me. They totally remove the black emptiness of real space.

One more vote for an option to turn off the nebulas. They really clash with the new star field and break immersion of being in space. ...

And there is space, or at least an internet representation of space in a science fiction world. No one said this was a simulator.
As for the visually impaired, why should time be wasted for the genetically inferior?

Maybe not a simulator (although, as mentioned, that is what CCP is aiming at), but at least something that does not interfere with the game's gui, at worst, and at best something that actually aids in the feeling of immersion of 'being in space'. ...

Immense art work? Why wouldn't these be procedural and volumetric?
Also - the dust clouds haven't been upgraded as far as I can tell, they still look like front-facing texture planes, which still eats up cpu. There are some great volumetric and procedural effects that can do a better job and are more dynamic. The only difference I saw with Tyrannis was a few texture upgrades to the ships & stations (they are nice, but where's the additional geometry??)
I think spending time on painted backgrounds is a waste. Procedural volumetrics is the only way to move forward.
