Does it bother anyone when you have a fleet commander say something like "attack the group on the right." ?
Of course we assume it's his right, but if you've zoomed out you can't really see which way his ship is pointing.
Since the tactical already describes a plane that is parallel with the ecliptic for the solar system, all that is missing is a concept of "north" to be displayed on that plane. Since I assume that a majority of Eve pilots live in the Northern hemisphere of this planet we call earth, and itÆs the majority of our experience that the sun is in the south and the cold is in the north à the tactical display should orient south as pointing to the sun in the solar system. North then, would point away from the sun into the cold of space.
This is really only important to the ships within that 200 KM grid or so, therefore the absolute idea of north or south isnÆt really important.
Since the eve clients clearly need to know where the sun is for calculating shadows, I canÆt imagine that this is difficult to implement.
Perhaps the second set of range rings (counting from zero) could replace the range numbers with ôN, S, E, Wö?
Hereafter the fleet commander could have something useful to say like ôattack the group to the east.ö

There is no 'north', but there is 'coreward' (relative to the galaxy) or 'sunward' (relative to your position in each system). That solves a lot of problems.

Please read the post again, of course there is no north in space!
My point was to have the tactical display point sunward and define that as 'south', which produces polar co-ordinates ... i.e. north is everywhere away from the sun.
Within the limited sphere of a 200 KM radius (or so) grid, we really don't care if there is an abosolute north.
Real Star Trek fans may recall that in reading the Technical Manual and all the other fan books published, that the co-ordinate system was based on a plane that went through the milkyway galaxcy and that 000 was in the direction of the center of the galaxy, zenith was above the milky way, and nadir was below. But how did they decide which side of the galaxy was above and which was below? Simple they chose the direction from Sol to Polaris to define ônorthö or zenith.
So itÆs all a matter of definition.
Now, we can use familiar terms like north south east and west because we all know how these compass points relate to each other. It would be far simpler than saying ôanti-sunward, sunward, spinward, and anti-spinwardö
You just have to use a little bit of your God given imagination to see what IÆm getting at.
