I have an ATI 6800Pro video card. I installed the latest drivers last night to get it up to release 4.12. I also went to windows update and downloaded those drivers off microsoft's website to get me the best performance.
Well I know it's dark in space but my ship is a probe and its pretty dark looking. Also it is hard to see alot of things as the brightness of the game seems way too low. I tried to set the brightness on my monitor but since its digital connection that has basically no effect to brighten the screen up to see something. The toons and even items in my hanger have dark shadows on them making them hard to see. I played with the graphic seetings in the game and I can only change the transparency and colors of the boxes displayed. It seems there is no way to brighten up the monitor to see items and ships better.
The game is very playable but I just want to brighten up the game and make the ships brighter to see. My probe ship is almost entirely black with this card installed. My toon pictures all seem to have dark showdow effects on them also. I tried to adjust the settings of my video card along with random tries at the EVE graphic settings in the game but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions as to what may help?

Is there a gamma correction option in ATI's settings application?
The NVidia control panel has the option to setup your own profiles for different games. I set up a profile for Eve with gamma corrected to make things a little more visible. I'm assuming that ATI will have something similar.

Yes, there is, but the problem with having to up the gamma quite a bit is that some of the color choices in the game makes it real hard to see the visual hints.
The cap meter gets hard to read, and the lil flash from active modules also gets hard to see. Seems like the dark and highlighted colors get "closer" if you up the gamma more than a notch.
I have an ATI as well as a radeon card, and the radeon isn't nearly as dark as the ATI is, so my guess is that the devs use radeon cards.

How old is your monitor? Is it a problem in other games, not just EVE? If so read on, you may have worn out your CRT...
You should have CRT monitors set to 70% brightness (as a general rule, different brands will vary) because the higher you go, the quicker the tube wears out. If you start on 70% you reduce the wear on the CRT, you'll then find in 3-4 years time you can increase it as the tube starts to fade. If you start on 100% you'll just have to put up with a monitor that's beyond help ;)
I know people like to have a nice bright monitor but if you wack them up to 100% all you're doing is drastically shortening your monitors lifespan.
Before you ask, I speak from experience. Dont think that because you have a nice branded expensive monitor that you're immune either. They tend to last longer (usually to the tune of several years longer, more than justifying the extra expense on them) but they'll suffer the same fate eventually.
