Hey guys, I need some advice. I recently installed a program that allows me to view my cpu temp on-demand. Looking at it while playing eve, i've noticed something alarming. Under normal eve-playing load (itunes, firefox, 2x eve client, eft, evemon etc) my cpu hovers around 42C. I have an AMD Phenom II 9950 Quad Core clocked at 2.6ghz. So my question: Is this too hot? ive never had any problems such as BSOD or client crash, but my friend says his intel version stays right around 30-34 under similar load. I recently bought a nice after market cpu fan, but the temp only went down a few degrees C. Under no load, just sitting there, my cpu runs at 30C. Thanks!
Also, I run two screens, so both eve clients are open at once, with max graphics settings.

could be cooler, i would recommend a decent case if yours is garbage, airflow can be a real problem. is a temperature of 40c on a processor dangerous? no, probably not. if it hits 50 or above, you might want to start worrying. ~ |

I don' think its the case, I have the Antec 900. Perhaps water cooling might be an idea, though i really dont want to spend the isk, er, money...

decent case, water cooling is overdoing it unless you are going to overclock 300% i wouldn't be worried about it. ~ |

Its hot but no too hot. The life of your computer may (or may not) be cut down by a few years. You could start by using an aftermarket CPU cooler. Noctua is a fairly good cooler at a good price.
if that doesn't work, or you already have an aftermarket cooler, you can go with a corsair H50 -------------

How funny, I actually currently have that air cooler, and was actually considering the very same water cooler!

Your heat is right around where I would normaly see most AMD towers I have buildt. And your friends intel is right around were I would normaly see them in Intel towers I have buildt for myself over the years.
AMD works just as good as Intel for the most part over the years at a cheaper buck. And they have always run hoter for it as well.
In fact the pc I am posting on right now is a AMD blackbird duelcore and its about 3 years old and has always ran in the 40's to 50's. When it gets into the 50's I pull my tower apart and clean it out and its back down into the 40's again. I have pets and I smoke so I have to clean out my airflow pc's every 3 to 5 mons. God bless water cool. I only have to clean it out every 9-12 mons. Is it a rock? Point a Lazer at it and profit. Is it a ship? Point a Lazer at it and profit. I dont realy see any differnces here. |

42C is nothing. My Q6660 currently hovers around 53C under load, and 42C "idling" (FF + normal background apps).
It ran the same with stock cooler, although the one I bought isn't much better (got stuck with a cheap-ass replacement when I broke the mounting pins on the stock one reapplying thermal paste at cik's house).
So in my case, it's probably my case. CPU's are meant to take heat, believe me. At one point, my former heatsink was unseated for a time and I was playing games with it running at 92-97C. Didn't take too long for me to notice, though...
Another time it spiked to 130C when I thought I had the cooler on completely, but was mistaken.
tldr; your temps are fine.

#1 Your friend is a liar. 30-34 under load is really only possible with water cooling and even then that is too low unless you are at stock clocks. Ambient temp is about 20-30 I am guessing so a load temp of 30-34 is pretty close to impossible using air cooling. What is your means of testing load? Eve? Try something more intensive like intel burn test or prime.
#2 Try and lower your vcore if you can. That may help with the temps. Also try to look at the airflow of your case and make sure the case is exhausting all the hot air. Antec 900 is fine but it doesn't mean you won't have airflow problems.
#3 "Max working CPU temp is 75C, CPU Shutdown temp is 125C. "
These are the temps for a 9950
For reference: I have a intel q6600 @ 3.2 and it idles at about 30-35 (range) and load of about 50-60 using IBT and prime. The vcore is 1.265

I have an i5 750 quad core overclocked to 4ghz from 2.66. If a computer game would actually stress all four cores to 100% the temps would go to 80C. But as none don't - yet its a practical overclock.
I have a Corsair Nautillus water cooling kit. Its a fairly cheap external one. In the future I will upgrade it with a bigger radiator when a computer game needs all four cores flat out. AFAIK only Battlefield Bad Company 2 utillises quad cores properly.

i run upto 5 clients on a phenom x3 cpu cooled by a stock heatsink and fan
average temp is about 55 degrees c when the 5 clients are running. the cpu can run quite well upto about 70 degrees then u start having problems.
my gpu is another story........ the old stock cooler sucked balls... i improvised and made an amd athlon x2 fan fit on the gpu's heatsink at the expence of a pci x1 slot.
now running 5 clients the gpu sits a a stable 45 degrees c. SIG: if my message has spelling errors its cos i fail at typing properly :P |

42 is COLD ...
AMD CPU's are well known to run HOT ... I had one working for years (my old 2004-2009 puter) running around 60 no problem. CPU is still good, works and boots up normally, never had any issues with it.
As mentioned before, people working around 42 have more than enough airflow.

No, this is not hot at all, its just fine I have a Phenom II X4 955 which runs at 45-55¦ when playing eve, and thats temp is just fine for a processor. If it starts going above 70¦, you should worry, above 80, shut down the computer and find out what's wrong. My laptop has a intel core 2 duo 2.8Ghz and when i play eve on it its temp reaches 92¦(gpu and cpu have the same cooling), i sometimes play for 10 hours straight at that temperature, the laptop is not dead yet(tho it has set 2 hard drives on fire because they are next to the cooper cooling), after 4 years of volcanic heat and desktops usually can take more heat than laptops (still, STOP at 80¦C ), especially AMD processors.

as i said above, 50 isn't anything to worry about ... at all. if you read the manual of the processor it should say AMD recommend keeping the processor below 65¦.
Otherwise, you might want to check your GPU heat, it could be hotter

If you are worried you can check out the thermal thresholds for your processor at amd's website. I believe you're in the right neighborhood.
Everest is a good program if you want to monitor that stuff, they have the thresholds for most cpus and gpus already in their software.

I think for AMD CPUs, the danger area is above 75c, so 42 should be just fine.
If you are using a stock fan, you can always change it out for something else, personally I use a Zalmann, works great for me so far. The stock fans that AMD sends out has a thermal pad on the bottom for heat transfer between the CPU and the heatsink. These are okay, but most of the time they don't fully cover the area of the CPU and can have microscopic air pockets in them that won't transfer heat too well.
A good thermal paste can solve that, such as Artic Silver compounds. They can cover the entire CPU surface and fill in those air pockets for optimum heat transfer. The only downside is that they can be messy. Just keep in mind that some types actually GLUE your heatsink to the CPU.
Another important thing you can do is get some compressed air and blast the inside of your case. Make sure no dust is clogging up any of the fans or grills. In one case some years back, I had a lot of dust that hid itself inside my CPU's heatsink. Disassembled the entire thing, washed it out, dried and reassembled it and the CPU ran 10c cooler. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |
