Thinking about trying my hand at a bit of ratting. Currently run missions mostly LVL3 but some LVL4, between bounties and salvage I can usually make up to about 2-3M ISK every hour. From what I have read ratting in any place that is worthwhile requires very low SEC sectors. So is it worth risking one of my battleships doing this. If so which are the best ships for this kind of objective.

You dont need a battleship for low-sec ratting. Take a BC, assaultship, Cruiser - doesnt need to be that expensive of a fitting either. Low-sec BS-rats aren't that hard to kill and you won't loose that much of money WHEN you get ganked.
A T2-fitted cruiser will do fine - thats about 12M.

Honestly, command ships and some HACs work better for that sort of thing (assuming you have T2 weapons and good gunner/missile skills). They take out scrambling frigs much better and jump from belt to belt faster.
Assuming you have decent 0.0 access then Ishtars are great and Tengus are amazing (if you're deep enough in friendly space to risk that kind of ship). Nighthawks would be excellent too. Even gank-fitting a Drake works well enough but the drake can't pull off enough to match 4s in a BS (though with good skills it can outperform the 2-3mil/hr you're getting now). ** Disclaimer: Author sometimes spell checks but is not responsible for sins of commission, omission, emission, transmission, or submission. My suggestion was based on him just doing lvl 3's and only earning 2-3M/h...implying he's not a rich man. But I may be wrong...

True. CSes are probably out of his league but HAC aren't out of the question. A good BC would probably be the ideal ship for someone at his skill and wallet size level. ** Disclaimer: Author sometimes spell checks but is not responsible for sins of commission, omission, emission, transmission, or submission. Edited by: Der Valkirie on 18/08/2010 00:54:45 Actually my assets are about 2B ISK and I have I have Raven/Megathron BS - Drake/Ferox BC - Cougar/Hawk AS - Manticore SB as well as several other ships. I do not have the skills for Capitol ships. Soon trained to use Recon Ships how would one of these work?

My favourites are PvP fit shield cane/rupture/harbinger. Harbinger has added advantage of ammo not taking much space in the cargo so good for prolonged stay in low-sec. I say shield tanked nano-ships 'cause passive shield regen between belt hopping is good+you can always pew pew in your PvP fit (much better than getting caught ratting in active armor tanked ship...), and nano gives you good ability to get out when/as needed.

IF your doing it soley for income, then unless you can rat in 0.0, your much better off doing missions. Get through those level 3s and the level 4s will be paying out more than you will get from ratting in low sec, with no risk too.

Solo. low sec ratting in a drake is kind of asking for it tho.

Indeed it is, an ishtar hunted me down once when I did that.
This is why only gonna use ships that have cov cloak from now on.

Ratting can absolutely be worthwhile. If you can set up a decent ratting bs, and set yourself up in nullsec in a renter corp or renter alliance. (not hard to do, there are tons, and basically are just looking for warm bodies.)
You'll definitly be making more than 3-4 an hour, probably to start, something like 15 an hour with low skills and a meh system. If you get good skills, a well fit ship, and an upgraded system, you can push about 30-40mil an hour blitzing Sanctums (A type of Cosmic Anomaly that spawns in a lvl 5 upgraded system).
On the other hand, keep in mind that level 4 missions still make pretty good money, so if you get to the point where your running lvl 4s relatively fast, you can probably approach roughly the same amount of money. It may be a little less, but its obviously a lot less risky.
If you do stick to 4s in empire, remember to at least check out a bit of PvP =)

Edited by: Celia Therone on 19/08/2010 02:33:44 It all depends where in null sec you can rat. A lousy null sec system isn't worth the time from my experience, you're much better off doing high sec missions. Low sec ratting sucks even more.
Unless, of course, you get hugely lucky with faction drops which wasn't my experience of null.
And 2-3 mill/hour seems very low for level 4 missions unless you're totally in over your head. Honestly it seems low for level 3s too but I haven't tracked those numbers in quite a while.

Edited by: Spineker on 19/08/2010 04:47:55 I think you can get rich very fast with 0.0 ratting even with the every now and again podding. Just need to setup correctly. I had a buddy buy his capital books in a solid no doubt Mountain Dew frenzy weekend.

This, I am ratting in Stain NPC 0.0 1 hour 30 minutes 16m ISK, no interruptions by anyone, though you do get some at times, I have also managed to get two officer spawns and 10 True Sansha spawns in my time here, though in the initial period I was not aware of them and how to get them to spawn.
Edit: PS I use a drake with a cloak and have plenty of safe spots, easy ISK

Basically, low sec ratting is only worth it for the thrill and the option for pvp.
If you go for isk per hour, you are better off blitzing lvl 4 missions, or ratting in nullsec, which is both more profitable, and ratting in nullsec is safer too, if you join the right corp with acces to it.
if i run lvl 4 missions, i get anywhere between 3,5 and 10 mil bounty per tick (20 minutes) depending on the missions you get, add the rewards and the downtime in between missions and you still have a nice income if you do them fast.
