I just noticed someone has built on top of my extractors - but they have a beautifully symmetric hexagonal array of extractors and processors. Whenever I place stuff I get the odd position offsets. Are they a PI God, or are PI macros now live (though this one should be easy for CCP to spot)?

Personally, I just dial my mouse sensitivity way down and nudge it pixel by pixel till its in a buildable spot, and perfectly nestled in against the others. Theres little advantage to where you put it precisely, provided its all on the hot spot, so feng-shui it is. |

I normaly place them as close as possible around the spaceports - so the natural form that u will get than is the hexagonal ;)

Me too, for the shortest links. Less/shorter links allow for a larger amount of usefull structures.

When you view somebody else's PI buildings on a planet, it's not the correct position, normally more spaced out.

Ever notice this optimal PI configuration looks an awful lot like CCPs logo?

The hexagon is the most efficient way of placing those structures, actually if you look at the videos for PI made by CCP, the tyrannis trailer and whatnot, you see hexagons blipping up as well, giving you an indication for that.
I build my structures in a hexagon as well.

I like to make a hexagon with the space port in the middle. I make factory planets and extractor planets. __________________ Follow me on Twitter Please add the ability to autolink planets in support of PI.

Here is how one of my low-sec colonies got laid out. I'm not sure if it still exists though:
Once you get 7+ processors though, the design changes a fair bit or the links start needing to be upgraded.
I have only layouts on the site too.

I use a little trick to get a perfect geometry for savings in power grid:
- I start by placing one extractor onto one peak spot, and another extractor on another peak spot (for two different resources I want to extract). - Then I create a link between the two extractors and use it as a guiding line. - Onto this first link, or guideline, do I set up my launchpad so it sits on a perfect line in-between the two extractors. - Processors are being setup on top of this line, too. - Then I remove this first link, and create proper links, going from the extractors, over the processors, to the launchpad.
The result is a minimum in power grid usage for a setup to extract two resources, because it sits along a straight line. --

I think I read that if the extractors are close together, you lose yield - a mechanism put in place to promote 'PvP' when DUST is released.
I'm assuming you don't (going by these pictures, can anyone confirm/deny that?

Edited by: TPhee on 24/08/2010 11:36:29 would seem odd. Even when crammed against eachother, the links still show up as having several kilometers between them. If future dust players fail to manoeuver their FPS character through a 25km gap, then maybe they should revert back to other games involving less manoeuvering. Like watching TV.
on a more serious note: I have not seen any significant absolute increase/decrease in yield per extractor by placing them closer together. I was able to fit one more on my planet though, so indirectly it increases my yield to put them close together. But not per indivudual extractor to my knowledge.

If you make the CCP Logo with your PI structures then you get infinite ISK.

Personally, I find positioning structures as close as possible horizontally pretty easy. What I tend to do with colonies is figure out how I want to set 'em up, then place one line horizontally, then nestle the above/below structures in the divot between the two existing structures.
It may seem simple, but doing it that way gave me a LOT more success than how I did it at first (put one down, then make a circle around it).
