I am Gallente citizen and I am very fond of long range shooting. It just feels wrong to go with my ship through all those frigates to get to my battlecruiser in order to orbit it closely and deal damage while I am being pounded by all others. Is there a tool for calculating the distance where my blasters can still deal damage and my ship can still maneuver around battlecruiser in tight orbit while his guns (which I imagine are bigger and have lower tracking speed) are not capable of hitting me? I remember few years ago there were some graphical explanations how to calculate these things, but I can't find those pages any more. Is there a pratical way for Gallente cruiser to engage in long range fighting? I know that rail guns don't have high damage modifier but what are they good for then? What is more sensible to do: learn projectile turret and use that on my Gallente ship and lose bonuses I get with ship or learn Caldari cruisers and change ships? I mean that for long range fighting.

If you right click on your equiped railgun to can see the current optimal range and falloff range. The max range is optimal range + 2 * falloff range. However shooting at optimal or lower range will have the best DPS.
Also notice that different ammo also effects your range (at the expense of damage). On top of that you can increase your range with Tracking Enhancers and Tracking computers.

Edited by: Louis deGuerre on 18/08/2010 09:54:26 It's best to hit with max damage ammo, i.e. antimatter, so load that in your gun and right click to check the optimal. With railguns your tracking won't be good so you want to fight at optimal range up to optimal range + 1 * falloff. If you get closer it will usually not be easier to get hits as your targets will start to orbit you. With blasters your range will be tiny so it's not well suited for PVE as you'll spend so much time running after targets. Ye olde graphic tracking guide - hmmm...link appears to be dead now. Sentry drones (warden) are an excellent Gallente long range weapon for the drone boats and the gun-battleships do respectable damage with the large railguns. I'd stick with Gallente as they might not be the best PVE boats around, for PVP they're still superior to Caldari.

Also, If you turn on your tactical overlay and mouse over your turrets, it will visually show you your optimal and falloff.

Thank you for your help, but I still don't understand what are rail guns good for? Are they good just because they are good all-around? Every guide I read said they do very little damage. So why use them then? Are they the proper choice for Gallente fighter (considering bonus I get for Hybrid turrets) or should I look in other directions (maybe artillery or missiles)?

It's not that some weapons do insane damage and some don't. It's a few percent more or less. Railguns are medium/long distance weapons that you mainly use in missions - or in PvP with sniper boats. Blasters do a little more damage - as a rule short distance means more damage, this is valid for shorter distance ammo as well. Rule of thumb is: shorter range = more damage.
If your ship has damage bonuses it's usually a good idea to fit the corresponding weapons. If you want to do more damage, use the modules that will increase your damage (like Magnetic Field Stabilizers and rigs) and train the skills that increase damage output/rate of fire.

Use rails, but get the gunnery support skills up to 3 or 4 as soon as you can. Blasters are not really for pve.
As someone said above, use anti-matter and fit your range around that.
