Right now, avatars have had very little effect on the gameplay. Their purpose has been transient at best, and of little value except to perhaps roleplayers. Their was little weight felt behind the choice of selecting your avatar; and for anyone joining prior to the attribute shuffling their were also other reasons beyond the superficial affecting the player's choice. The prospect of Incarna was either a far-off future or non-existent.
With Incarna, that all stands to change. People will start to become involved with their avatars more intimately, and they will become a whole lot more important to the player.
I don't think it would be fair to penalize the player for (essentially throw-away) choices that they made very early on with no recognizable impact on the game. It seems like the only fair option would be to let players have a one-time chance to change their race and gender.
Of course, to go along with that a name change should be offered, but due to the nature of EVE this would have to be handled sensitively. Perhaps permanently attaching the old name to the character via an 'alias' tab that was fully search-able in the people and places tab would suffice?

I couldn't care less about bloodline / ancestry change; race should probably stay, name should definitely stay. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

I think he mentioned bloodlines due to their impact on the characters apearance due to genetic traits and such.

There was a thread in general discussion several months ago were one of the Devs agreed to go away and look at a one time sex change. Also I cannot see any problem with being able to change race to some extent, since plastic surgery is going to be in game and that will allow you to add/remove some physical traits.
However, no to the name change, your name is your reputation, if you can do it once people will demand that they can do it other times. For example after buying a character or new players who come after incarna. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Please, with over 340k accounts there is no reputation that follows you. 99.999999999999 - repeating of course - percent of all players will never have heard of you no matter what you did or didn't do in the game.
However, I do agree that we need more males named Laura or Susan as well as more female characters named Hank and Bruce. |

killmails/killboards, forum posts, chatlogs, everything about your character's history would become irrelevant with a name change. It's like starting a completely new character ------

No
you have to deal with the choices you made ... regarding name, sex and race ....
b/c if so, all ugly male achura alts would be ugly female achura alts ...
no to sex/races/whatever change
deal with it!

It will not effect the majority of players greatly I agree. but what about ? 1) The greatest corp thief's changing their name? 2) Taitors that have brought down whole alliances 3) The characters who are know for scamming? 4) Some of this forums legandary trolls.
As soon as they chance their name you will not recognise them unless you do a show information on every person you meet.
Not being able to escape the consequences of your actions is all part of eve, as is tracking someone down who wronged you and added their corpse to the station warehouse where you keep for those special moments when you want to relax and unwind. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

I think this is probably the best compromise.
Sure, changing the name is iffy at best, but as was previously pointed out, it beats a bunch of gender-challenged names on every character.
I don't know if changing race will matter that much; depends on how much customization you can do to your character I guess. But sure, why not; it doesn't hurt.
Honestly I think about 80% of EVE's population doesn't give a rats ass what your name is, and probably has no idea who you are, regardless of what you did. And if you are part of that 20% that really do care, then just right-click show info. Its not that big of a deal. Like really, how often do you interact with a player in such a meaningful way that his past history becomes relevant? Recruiting for a corp, joint ventures and trades are the only thing that comes to mind really.

Edited by: Lemmy Kravitz on 25/08/2010 00:33:35 Meh, I just can't wait till I can dock with a WT that refuses to come out. Walk around looking for him, spot him drinking in a corner. and ventilate his ass with extreme prejudice.
as for your cry "i made an ugly bald chick". Guess what, eve is a game of consequences. You made a bad choice and made a more manly version of Shaneno conner.. or how ever you spell her name... just sound it out, you'll get who i'm talking about.
I on the other hand have a roguish looking blasian with a slight googly eye.
Either way, I'm just happy that sometime in the future there will be no place safe in eve, not even inside stations =)

I think that some RP aspects should be put in.
Seriously, accounts change hands, and there is an almost even divide between people who do not want to misrepresent themselves in a game, and those who would, in third person view, prefer to look at at a more nicer arse all day.
The RP aspect could include a little "consequence".
imagine that hackers get into the clone database and mess things up a bit. This could require all capsuleers to visit the character creation board and recreate themselves.
Those that don't, should all end up being bald chicks with beards, or how about a little monkey, or perhaps maybe an Oompa Loompa (Dwarves!!!!!!!!!).

I would support something like this.
At the very least, be able to change your race. I'm not sure about sex changes...

I would say keep everything the same in terms of name/gender/bloodline as it appears in your character sheet. However in terms of how your character physically looks you should have free reign within your gender/race.

I have no objection to people changing their race, bloodline or gender choices, but names must stay.
As I have said several times, there are a number of people in the game who if I saw them enter system, I would dock immediately. Known gankers, for example.
Allowing name changes gives these people a second opportunity to surprise me that they have no right to have. That instant recognition is an important part of eve, and should not be messed with.
