there is. it means "more dumb." it was not a word back when "dumb" only meant "unable to speak," but "dumb" as a synonym for "stupid" has become widely accepted, as evidenced by the expression "dumb down."
Dumber is not an English word. If it is a colloquialism of America then so be it. One refuses to accept any American butchering of our native language so one will happily ignore Dumber too.
Please check the Oxford or Cambridge "English" dictionaries for Dumber.
fair enough, but my point is that if you accept the evolution of "dumb" into a synonym for "stupid" then "dumber" follows quite reasonably. oxford does list this definition for "dumb," and by way of comparison, oxford does not specifically list "larger" as an acceptable form of the word "large."
i agree with you if your complaint is with the transformation of the meaning of the word "dumb." and i certainly appreciate your smug, stuffy english arrogance.

Damn near every thread posted that contains more than 10 words or 30 letters, this one included, gets a 'tl;dr' stamp from some neck bearded neanderthal with the IQ of a raisin.
So many people whine tl;dr when presented with information, and then *****, complain and kvetch, spewing ignorant babble because they refused to be bothered to read what was presented to them and instead rely on rumor, innuendo and outright wild guesses.
The attention span of the modern human is shorter than a dog with a yard full of squirrels. Not just in this game ( where it becomes GLARINGLY obvious ) but throughout the entire population.
These modern morons cant be bothered to take the time to read information intended to enlighten them, but they can most assuredly take the time to post "tl;dr" and proclaim to all with proud declarations that they are ignorant and willfully choose to be.
And most of the rabble rally 'round, pointing to that self assigned badge of ignorance and proclaim it "cool".
No wonder the world is screwed up.

Bolded the bit I actually read. Once you reach a certain point it's obvious that it's a generic whine, and you move on...

In their defense, the entire content of your post was in the thread title. By just looking at the title, I already knew what your post would be about, that it would be slightly long and mention that someone would say tl;dr in response to it, and that there would be at least three people in the thread who would actually post tl;dr in response to it to be funny.
Now that I type this, I'm actually wondering why I bothered to read it at all... I guess I was hoping for a surprise, or a funny picture of a cat.

It's amazing, honestly, how little you actually have to read of someones post before you know exactly what they're trying to say.
For instance, you used a lot of words, but your entire message was in the first sentence. It was almost completely covered by the post subject. Why should I waste my time reading filler when I have other things I could be doing, most of them better. Especially when most of your post is insulting?
A large vocabulary doesn't make you better, it just means you can say more with less effort. Which you seem to have failed at. |

"tl;dr" is just a simple filter of relevant information and I'm doing my best to include it in every long post I write anywhere on the Internet. If the reader is interested in the topic and have key notes of my post available in a "tl;dr" version, it's more likely he'll read the entire post.
"tl;dr" is not there because we are getting lazy or dumb, but quite the opposite. It's a new evolutionary step for filtering unnecessary information, complete idiots with long post and saves your time as a reader so you can spend your time more productively.

The authors of novels they call posts are equally to blame, imo.
If you do a poor job of writing, then the reader is gonna skip it. It's the author's job to make it worth the reader's time to read their post. __________________ Follow me on Twitter Please add the ability to autolink planets in support of PI.

Hey, we made the language ergo we get dibs on both butchering it and telling others how to use it. Colonials....

Different dialects are ok, there's no way to stop it. Well there is a way, but there hasn't much success with that. |

I definitively agree with the OP.
And if it was only about reading forums or everywhere else... In a vocal discussion, I know some persons which I have to repeat them 4 or 5 times the same information before they finally acknowledge it (and there is chances that it still fail), and this is not because they would be deaf. No, they just speak to speak, and hear what they want, not what people can say to them. No analytic mind, no brain...
Sometimes, I wonder if Mankind will become a few like the world we can watch in the film called "Idiocracy" (I recommend it). A big bunch of real morons without any neural function, and so a world who is slowy dying.
Originally by: Pesky LaRue I'm starting to see more and more emails - from colleagues (all professionals), not pals - with stupid things like "sry" and "thx". People have always been slightly dim and illiterate, but the constant mispelling of common words - things like "there" and "their" and "they're", as well as things like "rediculous" (instead of "ridiculous") and "supposibly" (not even a word, for crying out loud) don't bode well for future generations.
Well, there is worse : SMS... In a way, it forces people to use words like "sry" to send a small message, and indeed, it spreads across Internet. The sad thing, is when you read some of this guys ask why no one don't respond to their (unreadable) questions, and most of the time, they react violently when we explain... For them, we are the problem, and so we have to adapt...
The worst, was when I read an article from a dumba... I mean, a teacher of my country (France). He recommended to dispatch some teaching ressources to teach... the SMS style to children, at it is "an important evolution of our language" (No joke. I hope you don't have the same kind on your side)... I wish for him a slow and painful death. Signature removed for not being EVE related. Zymurgist |

I'm not a massive grammar ****, but the "there" , "their" , "they're" , "your" and "you're" mix ups seem to seriously wind me up.
Though I digress that all these years of instant messaging and texting has taken its toll on me, it only recently dawned on me that "cya" was actually an abbreviation of "see you" despite using it as a fully fledged word for quite a number of years.

1. tl; dr: Not having read the entire post means you really don't know what they said. (But yes, 'sometimes' you can quess and get it kind of right. Some of the time. Perhaps).
2. So why then after reading a few words of a 200 word post and deciding it's too long to read, is it necessary to reply tl;dr? It contributes what to the topic? Nothing.
3. When one 'doesn't read' a post and then takes the time to actually state "Hey! Look at me!!! I'm not interested in this. At all. So..... tl;dr. See, I'm not interested. I didn't read it cause it was too long. But I'm going to post an inane comment anyway," makes them look like a dimwit in all honesty.
4. And hey, some people get a kick out of that.
