Noticed this in Jita today and thought I would give the heads up to people who arn't paying attention.
Here is how the scam works. Scammer finds rare item (ex: Caldari Navy Squad Leader tags) that are on the market for a low price, low volume Scammer buys all of item and relists for a much much much higher price (ex: 50k-> 9M) Scammer then places a Want to Buy Contract in a station next door for a price higher than the total of the items on the market Scammer spams local with the WTB Contract Player sees WTB and checks market prices Player notices that he could stand to make a good chunk of change for simply buying item and moving it one station over Player Buys Item Scammer sees wallet change and cancels the WTB Contract Player Fails and is out a Billion or so
Yes, a well thought out scam that could be overcome by moving a few regions over, and buying the item at the original price. However, this guy is using some pretty hard to find stuff.
Thought I would warn people this was happening. Fly Safe -

One of the most beautiful things about scams is that usually the scammed guy thinks he's smarter and gets greedy.
He sees an opportunity to make some too easy money, and loses his mind. "I must do it quickly or that moron will realize how bad this deal is for himself".
With this scam, it's the same: if you are scammed, then it's just because you think that you're smarter than him, and he did not see the stuff he's looking for on the market.
Scamming is the ministry of divine justice, for it dealing the right punishment to the greedy fools.
And this scam in particular is an art form.

Edited by: omgfreemoniez on 26/08/2010 17:08:48 I have seen an even more disturbing development of this scam. The scammer will make his WTB contract in a VERY out-of-the-way dead end system, and he will put an alt in that system, who made the sell order. He will then spam the contract with his main, while waiting for wallet flash on his alt. He will ALSO watch local on his alt, and if local rises, he will cancel the contract immediately. Hence there is no way to take advantage of this scam: do NOT bother trying.
EDIT: By main, I mean main scamming alt. lol

That's the way most scams in Real Life work also...greedy people think they're going to make a quick buck.
movies and TV shows even have references to it 'The Grifters'...'Lost' (Sawyer)...etc.
If most people who have fallen victim to the scams would have looked into it closer and not been so greedy and in a rush, they would have never been scammed in the first place.
That said, I think it's a healthy dose of education for players to get scammed in Eve...it might even prepare them for the real world. Biggest scammers IRL are politicians.

You don't seem to understand the point. The reason for the scammer doing the thing I said is so that if some "smart" person goes to a different tradehub and buys a bunch of the item for supercheap (Or has a bunch of the item lying around), that person can't just go and complete the contract and make a quick half a billion off the scammer.
Since the scammer would have no way of knowing whether someone had somehow acquired a stack of the item in some way other than buying their overpriced stack, the only defense against this is for the scammer to keep an alt in the empty, dead-end system that the WTB contract is in, and cancel the contract if ANYONE enters local, as the odds are very high that someone entering local in a dead-end, backwater system, is there to sell to the contract (which is pretty much the only reason for anyone to go to that system).

No, because of the thing that they do with their alt that I said in my post.

I do understand the point; however if the gank is sucessful, and the items drop, they can rinse and repeat (similar to the high collateral courier contract that ends in a gank).
The point of people entering the system is just a precaution...

Two ways to beat this are:
1. Buy some of the scammer's quantity, too small to make it worth cancelling the buy order, and go deliver it.
2. Add the buyer and the seller to your contacts list so you can monitor whether they're online, and see if they have a pattern of repeating the scam in the same dead-end location over a few days. Then haul a bunch of stuff there, and when the scammer next sets up the buy order, remote sell it without entering the system (requires the higher-level market skills trained).
